Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Bridge Maintenance)

Position Title Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Bridge Maintenance) – Hartford Bridge Maintenance Facility – Hartford, CT Position Highlights Full‑time, 40 hours per week Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Office/On‑site assignment The Role The Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Bridge Maintenance) is responsible for overseeing and assigning daily duties to a crew of transportation maintainers in repair and maintenance operations of state‑wide infrastructure. The leader may make on‑site project adjustments as necessary and ensure crew activities comply with safety and quality standards. Eligibility Requirements Current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) Willingness to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, and mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30 Availability to work night shifts, weekends, and respond to bridge emergencies throughout the year Completed harness and fall protection training and compliance with the Department’s Lead Health and Safety and Silica Safety programs, including respirator physical and fit test Certification in aerial bucket truck operation and fall protection, including use of a safety harness and trauma strap Responsibilities Plan crew workflow and determine priorities Schedule, assign, oversee, and review work Establish and maintain crew procedures Provide staff training and assistance Conduct or assist in performance evaluations Liaise with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures Requisition materials and equipment appropriate to the various jobs Participate in performing crew duties when required Provide recommendations on policies or standards Prepare reports and correspondence as needed Perform preliminary site inspections of assigned jobs Stand by and respond to fire and/or crash emergencies at state‑owned airports, when applicable Perform related duties as required Minimum Qualifications Two (2) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of bridges and structures. For state employees, this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 2. Preferred Qualifications Experience in bridge maintenance operations, including carpentry, masonry, structural repairs, and working at heights Experience leading a work crew and providing direction Acting experience as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Bridge) Knowledge of the Department’s Bridge Repair Units (BRU) and Vendor in Place (VIP) maintenance contracts, and ability to interpret those contracts Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) Knowledge of department policies and procedures Special Requirements Employees may be required to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, and may need to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and certifications. Physical Requirements Applicants must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintain fitness to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required. Working Conditions Employees are exposed to extreme weather conditions, frequent lifting of heavy weights, hazardous road and traffic conditions, exposure to heights when working on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites, allergy irritants, and loud machinery. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program and use of protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
