Services Specialist for the Blind 2/Generalist

Overview The Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) seeks a Services Specialist for the Blind 2/Generalist to work in the Iowa Orientation Center for the Blind. The role involves providing small‑group instruction on non‑visual skills across all subject areas, filling classes as needed, and collaborating with students during evenings, weekends, and community outings to reinforce training. Responsibilities Provide individualized, non‑visual instruction to adults in all center classes. Teach small groups of students. Assist the Home Management Instructor with daily living skills and maintenance of training areas. Support students during evenings and weekends: preparing meals, teaching cooking, cleaning, organizing, and grocery shopping. Serve as the point person for student needs during shared shifts. Meet with the Center Director and students for check‑ins. Prepare and submit monthly service‑verified case notes for RSA reporting. Model a positive attitude toward blindness and promote the agency’s philosophy. Assess student progress, set goals, and write progress reports using the case‑management system. Participate in all center activities, including required weekend events. Purchase and maintain classroom supplies. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university and at least one year of full‑time professional or paraprofessional work in human services (e.g., social work, nursing, education, psychology, or related fields). Or graduate in library science or liberal arts with at least one year of library work experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience, allowing up to four years of substitution for required education.
