Yes Hours of Work Hours of Work 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM M-F Position Information Posting Number Posting Number TSU203752 Official TSU Title Drug & Alcohol Counselor Grant Title N/A Job Description Summary / TWC Summary The Drug and Alcohol Counselor provide prevention, education, intervention, assessment, counseling, and referral services to Texas Southern University students experiencing substance use concerns. This position supports the university’s commitment to student wellness, academic success, retention, and personal development by promoting healthy decision-making and reducing the impact of alcohol and drug misuse on the campus community. The counselor collaborates with campus departments, student organizations, residence life staff, faculty, and community partners to provide comprehensive substance abuse prevention and intervention services while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and university regulations. Conduct substance uses assessments, screenings, and evaluations for students referred to through self-referral, faculty, staff, residence life, campus police, or the student conduct process. Develop individualized treatment, intervention, and recovery support plans. Provide short-term individual counseling focused on substance use, recovery, relapse prevention, and wellness. Facilitate educational workshops, prevention programs, and awareness campaigns related to alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, prescription drug misuse, and other substances. Conduct group counseling and support groups for students in recovery or seeking behavioral change. Collaborate with Residence Life, Student Conduct, Campus Police, Athletics, Student Organizations, and Student Affairs to support student wellness initiatives. Coordinate referrals to community treatment providers, rehabilitation programs, medical professionals, and mental health specialists when necessary. Maintain confidential clinical records and documentation in accordance with HIPAA , FERPA , ethical standards, and university policies. Assist in crisis intervention and behavioral health response efforts involving substance-related concerns. Develop and implement campus-wide prevention initiatives during National Recovery Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, and other health promotion campaigns. Monitor trends in student substance use and recommend strategies to improve prevention and intervention efforts. Participating in university committees focused on student health, wellness, retention, and risk management. Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, student leaders, and residence life personnel regarding substance abuse prevention and intervention. 1.0 Hiring Range $55,038.89 - $70,174.59 Education Master’s degree in counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Public Health, or a related field from an accredited institution. Required Licensing/Certification Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor ( LCDC ) in the State of Texas, or eligibility to obtain licensure within six months of hire. Licensed Professional Counselor ( LPC ), Licensed Clinical Social Worker ( LCSW ), or related clinical credential preferred. Valid Texas Driver’s License preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Federal, State, Local and County laws. Policies, procedures, and practices. Requires full/complete knowledge in multiple disciplines and serves as an ultimate subject matter expert in at least one discipline or function. Demonstrates full command of technical and functional principles, procedures, and subject matter in multiple disciplines to handle any situation and lead or train others. Requires the ability to lead the development or modification of work procedures across multiple disciplines. Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications. Skill in: Detail oriented. Both verbal and written communication. Ability to: Work independently. Work Experience Minimum of two years of experience providing substance abuse counseling, prevention programming, or behavioral health services. Experience working with college-aged populations is preferred. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.
