Social Service Practitioner I (CFS)

Social Service Practitioner (SSP) I Social Service Practitioner I is a trainee‑level position in the professional social work series. These positions provide professional social work services including diagnosis, assessment, intervention and case management support to children and/or families with complex health, psychological or economic problems. Work requires investigating and supporting cases involving neglect, abuse, emotional or behavioral problems, physical/mental disabilities or other health conditions. Responsibilities Conduct diagnosis, assessment, intervention, and case management for children and families. Investigate cases of neglect, abuse, and other social work concerns. Perform home visits and field work, including travel throughout California. Coordinate services and provide risk and safety assessments. Training and Advancement SSP I workers work under close supervision while acquiring the skills required for promotion to SSP II, with a salary range of $71,510.40–$98,259.20 annually. Promotion to SSP II can occur after completing the training period or meeting the minimum requirements for the SSP II, plus a satisfactory work performance evaluation. Special Assignments and Financial Incentives Bilingual Positions – Applicants fluent in ASL, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish or Vietnamese are strongly encouraged. Additional compensation may be provided for bilingual positions. Standby or Call‑Back Duty – Availability to respond to emergencies. Rotating/Swing/Night Shift – Availability for 4/10 or 3/12 schedules; may receive an evening/night shift differential. Must be willing to work weekends. Benefits Social Service Practitioners receive a competitive salary and benefits package as part of the County’s comprehensive benefits program. Conditions of Employment Schedule and Overtime – Positions may require mandatory overtime and rotating shift work. Travel – Statewide, nationwide, and county‑wide travel may be required; mileage reimbursement is available. Physical Demands – Ability to visit clients in various settings, assess risk and safety, and lift up to 50 lbs. Sponsorship – The County does not sponsor visas. Qualifications Option A: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from a Council of Social Work Education accredited school, or within 120 days of completing a BSW. Verification of the degree is required upon hire. Option B: 30 semester (45 quarter) units of graduate or upper‑division coursework in gerontology, behavioral science, psychology, social services/human services, anthropology, cultural and gender studies, human development, criminal justice, or a closely related field. A list of completed coursework or transcripts is required, unless a bachelor’s or advanced degree in a qualifying area is already earned. Two (2) years of casework experience equivalent to a Social Worker II in San Bernardino County is required. Experience as a Social Worker II trainee is not qualifying. All degrees and coursework must be from accredited institutions. International credentials must be evaluated by a reputable credential evaluation service.
