INTERMEDIATE TYPIST-CLERK / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT HOMELESSNESS

Overview The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Intermediate Typist Clerk vacancies related to the homelessness crisis. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. Before the end of the initial work period, the applicant will be assessed on work performance; those who pass will be considered for permanent appointment. Responsibilities Type abstracts of judgment, executive notices, and other legal documents requiring extreme accuracy or independent judgment. Type complex charts, forms, statistical documents from rough draft requiring skill in arranging tabular material. Process documents according to specialized procedures for property descriptions, court papers, transcripts, and legal process. Check documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal and other requirements. Answer questions and provide public information concerning regulations, procedures, preparation and filing of legal forms, applications, and permit requests; act as special receptionist or counter clerk. Keep records of a nature requiring specialized knowledge, discrimination and judgement in selection, compilation or computation of data including cost data records and distribution ledger. Maintain clerical controls where work is divided among personnel performing separate parts of an operation. Search records and files for data where judgement and discrimination are required. Answer correspondence requiring selection of data for replying; refer unusual cases to a superior. Estimate amounts due and collect fees. Exercise minor supervision over the work of others. Compare or segregate documents in cases requiring specialized knowledge, e.g., auditing warrants or purchase orders. Operate office machines such as calculators, video display terminals, word processors, or personal computers to input data, perform computations, or produce documents. Minimum Requirements Training and Experience: Six months of full‑time office clerical experience involving typewriting in the County service OR One year of full‑time office clerical experience involving typewriting outside the County service OR A certificate or Associate of Arts degree in clerical procedures or office administration from an accredited college. Typing Skill: Ability to type at a rate of 40 net words per minute. Physical Class: II – Light: Administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort, occasional light lifting to a 10‑pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Exam Requirements Applicants must pass a County of Los Angeles approved typing test at a minimum of 40 words per minute. The test may be taken online; the results are required for qualification. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. Before the end of the initial work period, the candidate will be assessed on work performance; this assessment will be weighted 100%.
