Histology Supervisor

The Histology Supervisor manages all histology and anatomic pathology laboratory operations, including staff supervision, workflow coordination, quality assurance, and LIS system administration. Under the guidance of the Lab Director, this role carries full operational accountability for the AP department, ensuring prompt, accurate testing and reporting of results within established timeframes. The Histology Supervisor functions within the scope of practice regulated by state and national governments as well as various accrediting agencies.

Principal duties and responsibilities include supervising histology staff, performing grossing, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping, managing specimen accessioning, case tracking, and turnaround time monitoring, coordinating daily workflow with pathologists, administering the Orchard Enterprise Pathology module, defining and maintaining AP report templates, managing reference lab send-out workflow, leading validation studies for new tests, stains, and instrumentation, maintaining all AP procedure manuals, SOPs, and validation documentation, managing equipment maintenance schedules, preparing agenda and reports for pathology quality meetings, facilitating proficiency testing, competency assessments, and continuing education tracking, coordinating with Clinisys on configuration changes and support tickets, performing annual CLEP permit renewal, maintaining active HCS coordinator access for ECLRS reporting, facilitating testing for xylene and formalin exposure, performing specimen audits, and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification, current NYS Histotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Technologist license, minimum 5 years of experience in histology or anatomic pathology, prior supervisory or leadership experience in a NYS-certified laboratory, experience with routine and advanced histologic techniques, laboratory workflows, and regulatory standards, experience with immunohistochemistry techniques, strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent attention to detail, ability to work effectively in a team environment, and experience with an anatomic pathology LIS.
