About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Observation Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 2 years of prior experience required in a large, urban hospital License: Active RN license required Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred Must-Have: - EPIC charting experience required - Experience managing drips required - First timers not accepted unless experience is from a Level I Academic Medical Center - 100% nicotine-free facility Description: The Observation Unit provides care to patients who require evaluation and treatment for a period of time between 8 and 48 hours. Conditions that may require observation include chest pain, asthma, abdominal pain, kidney stones, and minor infections. The unit administers IV antibiotics, fluids, insulin drips, Nitro for blood pressure, TP, and lipids. Patient ratios are 1:5 during the day and 1:6 at night, with the possibility of 1:7 in rare cases. Mandatory weekend shifts include four weekend shifts out of eight possible in a four-week period. Travelers are required to work two out of three major holidays, with requests made at the time of application. Must float to meet facility needs, including potentially floating to other units. Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and LPNs assigned on some, but not all, floors. All candidates must comply with a nicotine-free requirement as part of the facility’s policy. Required skills include managing cardiac drips, IV insulin protocols, and various other nursing competencies. Travelers must complete the mandatory charting class in the first week unless otherwise instructed.
