ASCP Surgical Technologist - OB/Nursery

General Summary

The Surgical Technologist is a skilled caregiver who assists before, during, and after surgery using sterile techniques and specialized equipment. This position primarily supports C-section deliveries and other surgical procedures in Labor & Delivery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with surgical procedures, especially C-sections, in the Labor & Delivery operating room.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and demonstrate manual dexterity.
• Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring sterile conditions.
• Set up surgical tables for deliveries and procedures, restock rooms, and coordinate inventory with Sterile Processing.
• Employ proper aseptic and scrub techniques consistently.
• Perform unit-related tasks such as answering phones, patient checks, nursing aide duties, and electronic charting.
• Clean and stock delivery suites, nursery equipment, and related areas.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living including meals, grooming, skin care, and toileting.
• Provide postpartum care including application of K-Pads, ice packs, and binders.
• Collect specimens, take vital signs, and document intake and output.
• Communicate any changes in patient condition or behavior to appropriate personnel promptly.

Education

Graduate of an accredited Nursing, Practical Nurse, or Surgical Technologist program. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with documented cross-training as a scrub tech is also acceptable.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory. Surgical Assistants should have at least three years of scrub experience.

Certification and Licenses

Training in surgical scrub techniques is required, along with completion of scrub tech orientation in both OR and OB settings. American Heart Association BLS certification must be obtained prior to orientation completion. Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role demands considerable mental focus and physical stamina, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, as well as occasional encounters with hostile individuals, may occur. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
