Position Description

CEI Constructors is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Controller to partner closely with the CFO in overseeing the daily operations of the accounting functions. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, assisting with month-end and year-end close processes, supporting budgeting and compliance activities, and working with outside auditors. In addition, this person will help supervise and mentor two to three accounting staff, providing guidance and development opportunities. We are seeking an individual who is committed to continuous professional growth and improvement, as this individual is expected to develop into the Controller role within two to three years.

Position Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Support the daily operations of the accounting department and assist with managing accounting staff.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and other accounting functions.
• Review sales and use tax and payroll tax reporting and filings.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including preparing and/or reviewing journal entries and account reconciliations.
• Assist in developing annual budgets and department goals.
• Review financial actual to budget variances and investigate unusual transactions or variances.
• Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes, internal controls, and operational efficiencies.
• Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and applicable regulations.
• Collaborate with department leaders to support company objectives and provide financial guidance.
• Help cover duties of other accounting team members when those individuals are on vacation or otherwise out of the office.
• Work with outside auditors on annual audits.

Education / Experience

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• CPA designation preferred.
• Minimum of two years of public accounting experience with audit and tax responsibilities.
• Ten to fifteen years of progressive accounting experience with hands on experience in AR, AP, and Payroll.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and fundamental accounting principles.
• Experience with month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations and journal entries.
• Strong understanding of general ledger and subledger accounting.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Microsoft Word.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
• Construction industry accounting experience preferred, including job cost accounting and construction financial reporting.
• Experience with Vista by Viewpoint or similar ERP/accounting software.
• Experience with QuickBooks.

Physical Requirements

• Continuously sit while working at a computer and performing administrative tasks.
• Continuously use hands and wrists for typing, writing, and operating office equipment.
• Frequently communicate verbally and in writing with employees, vendors, clients, and business partners.
• Frequently read financial reports, spreadsheets, and detailed documents.
• Occasionally stand and walk throughout the office or project sites.
• Occasionally bend, reach, kneel, or crouch while accessing files or office supplies.
• Rarely lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Rarely travel to project sites or company locations as business needs require.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment with prolonged periods of computer use. Occasional visits to active construction project job sites or other company facilities may be required. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, moving equipment, construction noise, and dust while visiting field locations. Appropriate PPE must be worn during all site visits.
