Bolton Caldwell Fellowship – Solicitor General Division:* The West Virginia Attorney General's Office welcomes applications from recent and soon-to-be law school graduates (graduation years 2 for a fellowship in the Solicitor General's group. Considering applying for this job Do not delay, scroll down and make your application as soon as possible to avoid missing out. _About the Solicitor General Group_ West Virginia's Solicitor General group litigates before the U.S. Supreme Court and handles the State's most significant constitutional cases. The group won _West Virginia v. EPA_ and is currently litigating _West Virginia v. BPJ_, described as one of the most important cases of the term. The group also litigates cases of significant concern to the Attorney General (including litigation against the federal government and other States), defends key West Virginia laws against constitutional challenges, works with other divisions to handle the most impactful state litigation, drafts opinion letters, and provides strategic advice. _The Caldwell Fellowship Program_ The fellowship program is designed for lawyers interested in gaining substantive appellate litigation experience in a practice group focused on federalism and the role of state litigants in state and federal courts. Fellows will take significant responsibility for their matters and contribute at highly substantive levels. Using their experience in West Virginia, fellows have gone on to secure federal clerkships and assume distinguished government positions, among other things. Working alongside the Solicitor General and senior attorneys, fellows can expect substantial appellate, administrative, and general litigation opportunities. Fellows may draft appellate briefs, dispositive motions, and administrative comments; write Attorney General Opinions; serve as moot court judges; and provide strategic advice on high-profile matters to the Solicitor General, Attorney General, and other state officers. The fellowship may also involve oral argument opportunities in the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, as well as formal and informal training opportunities. Fellows will serve one-year or two-year full-time terms based on interest and the Office's needs. Anticipated start dates are in late summer and fall 2026. The fellowship includes a competitive public sector salary and benefits. Fellowship positions are based out of scenic Charleston. Charleston is rich in historic architecture, an eclectic music scene, unique dining, and four seasons of changing mountain landscape. The capital city serves as the gateway to skiing, rafting, hiking, fishing, climbing, and more. _Qualifications_ Applicants must possess a J.D. degree by the time they start their fellowship. Excellent research and writing skills are required. Although all interested candidates with strong credentials are encouraged to apply, this program is ideally suited for applicants with: * Federal or state clerkship experience; * Top 20% class ranking or law review membership at nationally ranked law schools; * Substantive experience in appellate or administrative law, whether in public or private practice; or * Participation in moot court, mock trial, or similar law school advocacy programs. _Application Process_ Applicants should submit their resume, transcript, writing sample (appellate brief preferred), and cover letter to no later than January 31, 2026.
