Field Service Technician

Location: Northern California, with regional travel Employment Type: Full-Time or Part-Time Compensation: $20–30/hour, depending on experience About neatMon neatMon develops monitoring and automation technology for agriculture, water, industrial, and energy applications. Our systems combine field-installed sensors, communications, cloud software, and automation to help customers understand what is happening in their operations and act on that information. Our technicians are often the connection between the technology we build and the people who depend on it every day. The Role We are looking for a Field Technician who takes ownership of problems. This is a hands‑on position installing, commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting neatMon monitoring and automation systems at customer sites. You will work with sensors, low‑voltage wiring, communications equipment, monitoring nodes, control systems, and software. Technical ability matters, but the qualities we value most are attention to detail, persistence, curiosity, and communication. When something isn't working correctly, we don't want someone who simply gets it "good enough" and moves on. We want someone who wants to understand why it wasn't working, correct the underlying problem, verify the solution, and leave the system better than they found it. What You’ll Do Install and commission neatMon monitoring and automation systems at farms, vineyards, water systems, industrial facilities, and other customer locations. Install and connect sensors, monitoring nodes, communication equipment, relays, and low‑voltage wiring. Configure devices and software and verify that information is correctly reaching the neatMon platform. Diagnose hardware, sensor, wiring, communication, configuration, and connectivity problems. Follow technical problems through to resolution rather than stopping at the first apparent fix. Verify installations carefully before leaving a site, including wiring, sensor readings, communications, configuration, and physical installation quality. Identify inconsistencies or problems that others might overlook. Document installations, changes, troubleshooting steps, and unresolved issues. Communicate clearly with customers about what you are doing, what you discovered, and what happens next. Help customers understand their systems without overwhelming them with unnecessary technical detail. Work with neatMon’s engineering and support teams to investigate unusual field problems and improve our products. Test new hardware, firmware, and software features in real‑world environments. Perform preventative maintenance and service visits. Travel throughout Northern California and occasionally to other regions for installations and service. What We’re Looking For Attention to Detail Small mistakes matter in field technology. A loose connection, reversed wire, incorrect sensor configuration, poorly sealed enclosure, or overlooked setting can cause problems weeks or months later. We are looking for someone who naturally checks their work and notices when something doesn't look right. Persistence Some field problems are obvious. Others aren't. We want someone who enjoys troubleshooting and has a strong desire to understand the root cause of a problem rather than simply finding a workaround. A successful technician will frequently ask: "Why did this happen, and how do I know it's actually fixed?" Ownership If you encounter a problem, we expect you to take responsibility for helping move it toward resolution. That doesn't mean you need to know every answer. It means knowing when to investigate, when to ask for help, what information to collect, and following through until the issue has a clear resolution or next step. Customer Communication Our technicians work directly with growers, operators, managers, electricians, contractors, and other customer personnel. You should be comfortable talking with customers, listening carefully to what they are experiencing, asking good questions, and explaining technical issues in a clear and professional way. Customers should feel confident that you understand their problem and care about getting it resolved. Qualifications Hands‑on mechanical, electrical, electronics, networking, agricultural, industrial, or technical experience. Ability to troubleshoot systematically rather than relying solely on trial and error. Comfortable using hand tools and working with low‑voltage wiring. Ability to read wiring diagrams, equipment documentation, and installation instructions. Basic computer and software configuration skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to document work clearly. Comfortable working independently while knowing when to involve other team members. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Comfortable working outdoors in agricultural and industrial environments. Ability to climb ladders and lift approximately 50 pounds. Willingness to travel. Helpful Experience Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required: IoT devices and remote monitoring systems Agricultural technology Irrigation systems Pumps, valves, and control systems Sensors and instrumentation 0-5VCD, 4–20 mA, RS-485/Modbus, SDI-12, or similar sensor interfaces Cellular, Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or other networking technologies Low‑voltage electrical systems PLCs, relays, or control panels Solar‑powered or battery‑powered equipment You do not need to already know every technology we use. Curiosity, troubleshooting ability, careful work, and willingness to learn are more important than checking every technical box. What Success Looks Like A successful neatMon Field Technician doesn't simply complete an installation checklist. They leave a site knowing: The system is installed correctly. The data makes sense. Communications are working. Wiring and equipment are secure and professional. The customer understands what was done. Any remaining issues have been documented and have a clear next step.
