Located in the scenic Oakland Hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay, Piedmont offers a unique opportunity to work in a beautiful community while gaining hands-on experience with advanced aquatic systems.DEFINITIONUnder general supervision, assists with semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the City's aquatic facility, including supporting pool water quality monitoring, assisting with circulation systems, and performing routine preventative maintenance tasks; helps ensure facilities are safe, clean, and compliant with applicable health and safety regulations; and performs related work as required.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Does not exercise direct supervision but may provide basic assistance or guidance to seasonal or temporary staff as directed.CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is a part-time, assistant-level classification responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the aquatic facility and related systems. Incumbents perform a range of routine and semi-skilled duties, including assisting with water chemistry monitoring, basic mechanical maintenance, and facility upkeep. Assignments are given with clear guidelines, and incumbents are expected to perform tasks independently within defined procedures while escalating complex issues to higher-level staff.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.Assists in monitoring swimming pool operations, including water quality testing, chemical levels, and equipment checks; reports irregularities to supervisory staffSupports the operation, maintenance, and basic repair of pool circulation, filtration, and chemical feed systemsPerforms routine preventative maintenance tasks on pumps, heaters, valves, and related systems under supervisionAssists in troubleshooting minor plumbing, mechanical, and facility-related issues; refers complex repairs to supervisory staffCleans and maintains pools, decks, locker rooms, mechanical rooms, and associated facility areasMaintains basic records of water chemistry readings, maintenance activities, and inspectionsResponds to routine operational issues and reports emergencies such as equipment failures or hazardsAssists with coordinating supplies and maintaining inventory of chemicals, tools, and equipmentFollows proper procedures for safe storage and handling of chemicalsSupports compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and other applicable safety and regulatory requirementsAssists with facility inspections and preparation for regulatory visitsOperates and maintains hand and power tools related to assigned workObserves and complies with City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocolsPerforms other duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:Principles and practices of public swimming pool and aquatic facility operationsWater chemistry, testing methods, and treatment processes used to maintain safe and compliant pool conditionsOperation, maintenance, and repair of pool circulation, filtration, heating, and chemical feed systemsPreventive and corrective maintenance practices for mechanical, plumbing, and basic electrical systemsApplicable federal, state, and local health and safety regulations related to public swimming pools and aquatic facilitiesOccupational safety requirements and safe work practices, including hazard recognition and use of personal protective equipmentTechniques for providing a high level of customer service, by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staffThe structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammarModern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performedAbility to:Assist in monitoring and maintaining proper water quality; perform routine testing and make basic adjustments as directed to support safe and compliant pool operationsAssist in operating, inspecting, and performing routine maintenance on aquatic systems and related mechanical equipmentPerform preventive maintenance tasks and assist with minor repairs to pumps, valves, heaters, plumbing, and related systems; refer complex repairs to supervisory staffIdentify operational issues and equipment malfunctions, take appropriate initial corrective actions, and notify supervisory staff of more complex or emergency conditionsMaintain facilities, decks, and mechanical spaces in a clean, safe, and orderly condition; assist with routine upkeep and inspectionsAccurately document water chemistry results, maintenance activities, and operational conditions in accordance with established proceduresFollow and support compliance with safety procedures and regulatory requirements in the performance of assigned dutiesCommunicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, and regulatory representatives regarding routine operations and issuesOrganize and prioritize assigned tasks, meet deadlines, and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervisionCommunicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntaxEstablish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of workUse computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to complete assigned tasks and maintain recordsApply general safety precautions and procedures, including safe lifting practices and proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materialsEducation and Experience:Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, AND one (1) year of related experience in aquatic facility maintenance, pool operations, or related mechanical systems work. Experience in commercial or municipal pool operations is preferred.Licenses and Certifications:The City will provide training and cover the cost of required certifications.Possession of, or successful acquisition within six (6) months of hire date, a valid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification.Possession of, or successful acquisition within six (6) months of hire date, a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification, to be maintained throughout employment.Possession of, or successful acquisition within six (6) months of hire date, a valid Cal/OSHA Confined Space Certification, to be maintained throughout employmentPHYSICAL DEMANDSMust possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or aquatics facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Strength is needed to lift and carry recreation and pool deck equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Must possess mobility to work in a field environment and use tools and equipment; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; and ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in wet, hot and cold outdoor conditions. Visual acuity sufficient to perform computer work and other essential functions of the position is necessary. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone are required.ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTSWork is performed indoors and outdoors and includes exposure to noise, extreme temperatures, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and confined spaces. Incumbent may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR and may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities. Incumbent may interact with challenging staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.WORKING CONDITIONSMay be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed. Must be fingerprinted for submission for the purposes of a background check. All public employees in California are designated as Disaster Service Workers. As such, all City of Piedmont employees may be called upon to assist in performing a broad number of tasks in the event of fire, flood, earthquake, or other natural or man-made disasters.WORK WEEKThis is a part-time at-will position, requiring an average of 20-29 hours per week, may work weekdays, weekends, and holidays depending upon facility calendar. Hours of work may not exceed 1400 hours a year. Management reserves the right to change work hours.BENEFITSThe employee in this part-time position is required to work more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year, and therefore receives the following benefits:Retirement: Benefit depends upon membership date--Classic employee CalPERS 2% @ 60, employee share is 7%. New Members 2%@ 62, employee share is currently 6.75%. The City also participates in Social SecurityMedical: Eligible to enroll in the City's health care plan. The City shall contribute the minimum amount required by law toward the monthly premium for hospital and medical care benefits under the CalPERS Public Employees' Medical & Hospital Care Act (PEMHCA) Health Plan, which is currently $162/month. Any remaining premium is the responsibility of the employeeSick leave accrual earned at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of six (6) days or 48 hoursSection 125 plan available for contributions toward health care and dependent care expenses on a pretax basis457 retirement plan is available for voluntary salary contributions on a pretax basisEmployee Assistance Plan, with up to 10 counseling visits per person, per issue, per yearTHE APPLICATION PROCESSTo be considered for this employment opportunity, a city employment application must be submitted.
