Special Education Paraeducator Location: Shahala Middle School Department: Special Services Position Type: Temporary, Program Support, Paraeducator Class II Hours: 6 Hours per Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m.) includes 30‑minute unpaid lunch; 3.83 Hours on Early‑Release Days (9:35 a.m. – 1:55 p.m.) includes 30‑minute unpaid time; 190 Days per Year (180 student days / 10 holidays) Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026. The position will remain open until a qualified applicant is selected. Earliest recommendation after 06/25/26. Paraeducator Employment Requirements Must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. Must meet one or more of the following: Pass 455 or higher on the ETS ParaPro Assessment. Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Earn 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university. Complete a Paraeducator Apprenticeship Program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council. Upon hire, new paraeducators must complete state‑required training offered through Evergreen School District. Salary Placement New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range. Employees with verified prior years of service of similar occupational experience may receive experience credit toward salary step placement. Benefits Medical, dental, vision, basic long‑term disability, basic life and AD&D insurance through School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Eligible employees working at least 630 hours in a school year may also participate in FSA, DCAP, HSA, FPFSA (w/HDHP), and other supplemental benefits. Employer‑employee‑funded retirement benefits through Department of Retirement Services (DRS). Paid holidays and paid time off, including sick, vacation, personal, religious, and bereavement leave. Additional negotiated leave options are available under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for this position. Essential Functions Under direction of the Special Education teacher or IEP manager, provide special education services and supports to elementary and/or secondary students eligible for special education as follows: Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Provide one‑to‑one and group instruction to students as directed by the teacher to meet IEP goals. Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes. Assess student progress, evaluate learning, and collect student performance data to ensure progress toward each student’s IEP goals. Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests. Implement behavioral management strategies as outlined by the teacher. Assist in organizing and preparing instructional materials. Address student’s bathroom needs, including lifting and changing students when required. Feed students as necessary. Handle body fluids as required. Lift and/or position students as necessary. Provide services as directed by related service providers (OT, PT, SLP). Assist students with using assistive technology or physical assist devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, standers, or lifts. Attend necessary training sessions to maintain an up‑to‑date understanding of student needs. Other Responsibilities Perform other related duties as assigned. Physical Demands Vision, speaking, and hearing: 66‑100% required. Standing, walking, stooping, reaching, squatting, and bending: 33‑66% required. Lifting: up to 50 lbs individually; more than 50 lbs with assistance. Tolerates risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials. Rearing functions involve occasional running. Written communication and confidentiality: up to 33% required; verbal communication: 66‑100% required. Previous experience working with students in academic areas and/or professional coursework in Special Education. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Demonstrated ability to work with and supervise students. Personal characteristics of flexibility, initiative, and cooperativeness. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Willingness to learn computer skills and assistive technology. Willingness to learn to operate office equipment. Ability to work under conditions of constant interruption. Physical strength and ability to handle potentially aggressive student behavior. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships as part of a team.
