SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR
LOCATION: Sunset Elementary School REPORTS TO: Special Education Instructor/Building Principal DEPARTMENT: Special ServicesHOURS / WORK TIMES
6.33 Hours Per Day (7:40 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid lunch) 4.33 Hours on Early-Release Days (7:40 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. includes 30 minutes unpaid time) 6.17 Hours on Designated Full Wednesdays (7:40 a.m. – 2:20 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid lunch) 190 Days Per Year (180 student days / 10 holidays) Position Status: Program Support Position Duration: Permanent Classification Group: Paraeducator Class II Must meet Paraeducator Employment Requirements as follows: Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. Must meet one or more of the following: Have received a passing score of 455 or higher on the Education Testing Service ParaPro Assessment (ETS test/PRAXIS). Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university. Have completed a Paraeducator Apprenticeship Program (program must be registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council). *Note: Candidates who do not meet the required qualifications will be screened out. Upon hire, new paraeducators will be required to complete state required training offered through Evergreen School District. Salary Placement New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range; employees with verified prior years of service of similar experience may receive experience credit towards salary step placement. Employees may also be eligible to participate in FSA, DCAP, HSA, FPFSA (w/HDHP), and other supplemental benefits. Eligible employees may receive employer‑employee funded retirement benefits through Department of Retirement Services (DRS). EPS offers paid holidays and paid time off, including sick, vacation, personal, religious, and bereavement leave. Additional negotiated leave options are available under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for this position. Requirement for “Failure to submit a full application package will result in disqualification.” External applicants must submit official transcripts (upon hire) to confirm education or ETS ParaPro Assessment results with the application. Summary Statement Under the supervision of the Special Education Classroom Instructor and the Building Principal, the Special Education Paraeducator will assist in the supervision of instructional activities, working closely with students on an individual as well as a small group basis. Essential Functions Under direction of the Special Education teacher or IEP manager, provide special education services and supports to elementary and/or secondary students eligible for special education. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Provide one‑to‑one and group instruction to students as directed by the teacher so as to meet their individualized education program (IEP). Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes. Assess student progress, evaluate learning, and collect student performance data to ensure progress towards each student’s IEP goals. Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests. Implement behavioral management strategies using the emphasis and techniques that have been outlined by the teacher. Assist in organizing and preparing a variety of instructional materials. Address student’s bathroom needs as necessary, including lifting and changing students when required. Feed students as necessary. Handle body fluids as necessary. Lift and/or position students as necessary. Provide services as planned and directed by related services providers (OT, PT, and SLP). Assist students with using assistive technology, augmentative communication, or physical assist devices (i.e. wheel chairs, walkers, standers, or lifts). Attend various training sessions as necessary to maintain an up‑to‑date understanding of the needs of students that receive special education services. Minimum Qualifications Basic typing/keyboarding. Previous experience working with students in academic areas and/or professional coursework in Special Education. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Demonstrated ability to work with and supervise students. Must possess personal characteristics of flexibility, initiative, and cooperativeness. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Demonstrated ability or willingness to learn computer skills and assistive technology. Demonstrated ability or willingness to learn to operate office equipment. Demonstrated ability to perform under conditions of constant interruption. Must possess physical strength and ability to deal with potentially aggressive behavior of students. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team.
