CUSTODY ASSISTANT, SHERIFF

Classification Standards Assists sworn personnel in maintaining order and security in a Sheriff’s Department custody detention, station jail, or court lockup facility. Positions are para‑professional support to sworn personnel and are distinguished by the need to exercise independent judgment and initiative while under direct or functional supervision of designated sworn personnel. Incumbents are initially assigned to a Custody facility other than a Type I jail, receive immediate supervision from sworn law‑enforcement personnel, and assist in observing inmates, supervising recreational and work activities, and maintaining order. They may also assist in main or dormitory control booths, classification processes, and facility intake and release processes. Assists in supervising the conduct of inmates in sleeping quarters, meals and bathing, recreation, and work assignments. Assists in instructing and overseeing inmates assigned to various operational, maintenance, or rehabilitative activities. Assists in the operation of main or dormitory control booths. Assists in processing inmates for court appearances. Assists in administrative duties such as scheduling, maintaining logs, preparing reports or memoranda, and other record keeping. Controls or assists in controlling and monitoring access to attorney rooms and visiting areas. Processes fingerprints, photographs, or operates live‑scan machines for inmate identification. Issues visitor passes and facility employee identification cards. Operates a computer terminal to obtain criminal history information and updates classification or housing information. Interviews inmates and reviews records related to classification to determine security level and eligibility for transfer. Ensures compliance with Title 15 of the California Code of Regulations and other applicable orders. Distributes and accounts for facility keys. Assists in receiving and processing inmates at a Sheriff’s Station or Type I jail, including searching, booking, photographing, fingerprinting, and maintaining inmate records. Secures inmates, personal property, and monies according to department policies. Maintains gate book, station jail reference manual, and other booking paperwork. Transmits fingerprint cards and operates Live Scan equipment as needed. Issues personal hygiene supplies and approved medications. Orders, inspects, and serves food to inmates. Maintains sanitary conditions within custody, jail, or court lockup facilities. Responds to public inquiries regarding inmates. Provides opportunities for inmates to contact the Bail Deviation Unit for possible bail reduction or release on recognizance. Inspects court lockup and floor detention areas before and after inmate occupancy. Scans inmate wristband ID upon entry and exit from secured areas using the Defendant Inmate Movement Management System (DIMMS). Collects DNA from identified inmates as legally mandated and secures results in the DNA Offender Tracking System (DOTS). Selection Requirements Age: Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. Employment Eligibility: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED, TASC, HiSET, CHSPE, CPP) or higher education. Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by approved credential‑evaluation services. License: Valid California Class "C" driver license or alternative transportation method to perform essential duties. Physical Class: IV–Arduous – frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds with bending, twisting, or work on irregular surfaces. Occasional extraordinary physical activity may be required.
