Job Title

Temporary Accountant I & II with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region

Assignment Details

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year
Work Schedule: Full-Time: 40hr/week

Pay Rate: Accountant I - $39.50 - Accountant II - $45.80


Role Overview

The Accountant I/II performs professional accounting work supporting centralized accounting operations, financial reporting, revenue collection, account reconciliation, auditing, and compliance activities. The role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries, processing reimbursements, supporting month-end and year-end activities, and providing financial analysis and customer service. Accountant I is an entry-level professional accountant position, while Accountant II functions independently and performs the full range of accounting duties.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

• Prepare and post journal entries for payroll, benefits, accruals, allocations, reclassifications, revenues, and expenses.
• Reconcile bank accounts, general ledger accounts, and subsidiary systems.
• Prepare financial reports, schedules, disclosures, and supporting documentation.
• Assist with year-end closing activities and audit requests.
• Maintain fixed asset records and schedules.

Accounts Receivable & Revenue Processing

• Process daily collections and deposits.
• Record and reconcile cash receipts and revenues.
• Prepare journal entries for property taxes and other revenue transactions.
• Audit and approve cash transactions.

Accounts Payable & Expense Management

• Process employee expense reimbursements and credit card expense reports.
• Review invoices and verify compliance with policies and procedures.
• Audit cash disbursements and payment transactions.
• Process vendor and departmental invoices.

Compliance & Controls

• Perform accounting audits and account reconciliations.
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards, District policies, and funding requirements.
• Review purchase orders, contracts, and agreements for funding availability and policy adherence.
• Identify and correct financial transaction errors.

Customer Service & Collaboration

• Respond to customer, vendor, and stakeholder inquiries.
• Provide technical guidance and training to staff, interns, and temporary employees.
• Collaborate with departments on accounting and budgeting matters.

Required Experience

Accountant I

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
• Minimum one (1) year of professional accounting experience.
• Experience may be substituted for education (1.5 years of experience for 1 year of education, up to 4 years).

Temporary Accountant I Assignment

• Experience working with:

• Exposure to accounting transaction processing and reconciliations.

Accountant II

• Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
• Ability to independently perform full-cycle accounting functions

Preferred:

• Governmental accounting experience.
• Experience with ERP/financial management systems (e.g., PeopleSoft or similar).
• Financial analysis, auditing, and reporting experience.
• Budget preparation and budget control experience.
• Experience processing employee expense reimbursements, credit card reconciliations, and revenue collections.
• Experience supporting audits and year-end close activities.
