MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS HOMELESSNESS

Position Overview The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has declared a local state of emergency for homelessness. The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified individuals to fill emergency Mental Health Advocate vacancies related to the homelessness crisis. Candidates may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with the opportunity for permanent employment upon successful completion of the assessment. Essential Functions Communicate, represent, and promote the mental health services consumer’s perspective within the continuum of care. Orient consumers’ family members, significant others, and caregivers to the mental health system to assist them in navigating services. Facilitate consumer, family member, and caregiver access to departmental and community resources, including scheduling appointments and transportation. Assist clients in developing independent living skills such as housekeeping, cooking, budgeting, transportation, and personal grooming. Assist clients with housing needs by facilitating access to residential care or permanent housing. Facilitate clients’ participation with multidisciplinary teams by helping to formulate service goals and plans. Convey community and client cultural patterns and attitudes to mental health professional staff. Assist clients in completing application forms for various benefits and services. Lead recovery dialogues and discuss common transitional experiences. Act as an interpreter for the client population when necessary. Recruit and train volunteer mentors for clients transitioning into community living settings. Participate in conferences and meetings within the Department of Mental Health. Accompany clients to appointments and self‑help activities. Attend seminars and in‑service training related to duties. Requirements Option I: Six (6) months of full‑time paid or volunteer experience in mental health advocacy, including interacting with clients or patients on mental health or social service matters, answering questions, providing information about services and benefits, and coordinating group facilitations. Option II: Completion of a recognized peer, parent, or family advocate training program (training certificate must be submitted at filing). A valid California Class C driver’s license or an alternative transportation method for job‑related essential functions. Physical class: Light (administrative/clerical duties; occasional light lifting up to 10 lbs, some bending, stooping, or squatting; considerable ambulation may be involved).
