Job Overview Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, part of the University of Miami Health System, is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) for a full‑time position in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The OT1 is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care and performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards, documenting all procedures in the electronic medical record (EMR). Responsibilities Performs and documents the following items in the EMR: Reason for visit Tangent screen visual fields Chief complaint Basic ocular motility History of present illness Pupillary evaluation Basic review of systems Ocular surface assessment Review systemic and ocular medications Eye drop administration Record allergies Intraocular pressure measurements (Goldmann, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care) Pharmacy information Pachymetry Family, social, medical, and ocular history Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses Visual acuity at distance and near Color vision test Lensometry Stereopsis test Manual refraction Sensorimotor exam Confrontational fields Automated & manual perimetry (Humphrey visual fields) Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields Amsler Grid visual fields Provides support to providers, including documentation in patient charts as required, and directs patient care. Provides patient‑centric care, adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training, and maintains patient confidentiality. Follows patient safety best practices, hand hygiene, and infection control. Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned. Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness. Meets daily productivity goals and ensures all equipment is calibrated and in proper working order. Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications. Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities. Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary and works evenings and weekends as needed. Performs organizational duties as assigned, completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients, facilitates motility exams, and supports Virtual Care encounters and exams. Qualifications Education: High School diploma or equivalent Certification and Licensing: Basic Life Support certificate (BLS) Experience: 1 year of relevant experience Knowledge, Skill, & Attitudes Works well with patients of all age groups. Presents with a professional appearance. Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills. Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge. Works independently and in a collaborative environment. Displays basic knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility. Demonstrates ability to perform the appropriate patient work‑up using the EMR telehealth platform. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
