Job Title: RN - MedSurg/Tele Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years of Med/Surg/Telemetry RN experience required License: Current RN license required Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred Must-Have: Certification in medical-surgical nursing is a plus Description: The registered nurse will work in a MedSurg/Telemetry unit. This facility has a Level 1 Trauma Designation and is a teaching hospital. Each MedSurg unit has beds ranging from 20 to 36. Nurses will care for patients with acute or chronic diseases. Common diagnoses include diabetes, hypertension, infections, and electrolyte imbalances. Cardiac patients such as those post-cath and with CHF or A-fib will also be seen. Post-surgical patients in general, orthopedic, and trauma categories will be cared for. Patient ratios are 1:4 to 1:6 for RNs and LPNs. Assistants may have ratios up to 1:14. Telemetry skills are required, including the ability to monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms. Nurses will manage drips such as insulin, heparin, and amiodarone, and titrate for heart rate but not for blood pressure. The department supports staff with CNAs assisting in various tasks including vitals and patient safety. RNs are responsible for drawing blood from central venous lines. There is a resource team available that assists with discharge planning and floats to all units. An electronic medical record system is in use, along with various medical equipment. Nurses will rotate weekends and are expected to work major holidays. Requests for time off must be approved by management. The work environment is busy and team-oriented.
