Since 1978, American Indian Health & Family Services (AIHFS) has been a nonprofit health and community wellness center whose mission is to empower and enhance the physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being of underserved populations in Southeast Michigan. American Indian Health and Family Services, a Federally Qualified Healthcare Center (FQHC) in Southwest Detroit is seeking a dynamic Development Director, ahead of our move to a New State-Of-The Art Facility, projected to be completed Summer 2027!AIHFS is seeking a proven Development Director to lead and develop fundraising goals and performance for American Indian Health and Family Services (AIHFS). This includes setting strategic direction, implementing a capital campaign, and general development duties. This position will work collaboratively with consultants, CEO/COO, and the Board of Directors to meet philanthropic objectives. Duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Provide executive level leadership to the CEO, the senior leadership team, and staff and volunteers involved in fundraising.Develop the strategy, goals, and tactics for a capital campaign.Develop and manage relationships with major funders in southeast Michigan, especially foundations and individuals of significant giving capacity.Work closely with the Board of Directors and its Resource Development Committee to set and achieve goals and develop the skills of volunteer leaders.Initiate and develop relationships with non-traditional sources of capital campaign funding (social impact funds, developers, government).Initiate and manage all philanthropic grant proposals, communications, reports, and letters to donors and prospects. Keep records of prospect meetings.Maintain and develop prospects and donors through intentional, personal stewardship.Identify, research, and track foundation, corporate, government and individual donors.Arrange and participate in meetings with prospective donors with CEO and/or Board members, as well as providing superior preparation strategy and presentation for those meetings.Initiate and develop annual fund activities.Supervise the maintenance and accuracy of the donor database, including the creation of data entry policies, procedures, and coding.Participate in all applicable staff, committee meetings, and other meetings deemed necessary by the CEO.Other duties as assigned by the CEO. Qualifications:
Education/Experience: A Bachelor's Degree is required. CFRE preferred. At least 5 years of progressive experience and successful performance in development is required. Must have a solid track record of initiating and developing productive funding relationships. Capital campaign fundraising is a plus.Additional Qualifications:Must have the motivation and creativity to initiate, develop, and manage complex relationships that require above-average communication skills and high Emotional Quotient (EQ). Must be able to listen carefully and then develop productive, customized approaches for major donor level prospects.Must have a solid knowledge of and working relationship with area foundations and individual donors of giving capacity.Must have above-average interpersonal, presentation, and writing skills.Must be self-directed and able to work independently, as well as be a solid team member.Must be able to maintain confidentiality, handle crisis and tolerate stress professionally.Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends and overnight or extended travel as necessary.Must be able to use software on the Microsoft 365 platform.Ability to promote an alcohol, tobacco and drug-free lifestyle.Ability to apply proficient understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.Other Requirements: Familiarity and/or experience working with the Native American community at a local level; respect for and knowledge of traditional, cultural and spiritual practices of a diverse Native American community, as well as an ability to work with other racially, culturally and ethnically diverse populations preferred.
