Detention Officer - Civilian-Sheriff's Office

Fort Bend County is seeking a Detention Officer – Civilian to perform a range of duties essential to maintaining security and order in the detention facility. Responsibilities Perform hourly inspections of the detention area, including catwalks, separations, and hallway areas. Maintain order within the detention area and supervise daily inmate activities to ensure safety and health. Verify records and identification of inmates being released and/or booked. Conduct shakedowns of inmates and cells as needed on a regular basis. Supervise work details and monitor progress. Verify arrest documents before accepting prisoners, ensuring awareness of various offense grades. Monitor programs and activities where inmates interact with outside professionals. Assist other agencies with in-house computer systems during booking and with incoming inmates who may be violent. Perform upkeep of fire‑life safety equipment. Operate mechanical security devices. Maintain records on activities, incidents, shakedowns and other required functions. Supervise feeding and hygiene of inmates. Sign for and be held financially accountable for equipment issued. Assist other employees with their duties. Act as in‑house bailiff for the justice of the peace/magistrate. Maintain inmate counts and monitor visitation. Enforce jail rules and regulations, writing reports for disciplinary action charges. Participate in emergency management activities during local state‑of‑disaster events as directed by county managers. Qualifications United States Citizen, 18 years of age or older. High School Diploma or GED. No previous experience required. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to complete projects in a timely manner. Valid Texas Driver’s License. Requirements & Testing Pass polygraph, psychological, physical screening, and urinalysis examinations. Obtain Basic Jailer Certification within the first year of employment. Be eligible for licensing by TCOLE. Ability to work rotating shifts. Schedule and complete the Nelson‑Denny Reading Test before proceeding in the hiring process. Upon hiring, full‑time and part‑time employees become members of the Texas County District Retirement System (TCDRS). Full‑time employees also receive a wide range of benefits.
