Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 26 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Active state license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience - Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit - Heparin drip experience Description: The unit has 54 beds with a mix of semi-private accommodations. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common patient diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and some medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips, specifically heparin titrated based on PTT. A charge nurse is available 24/7 and typically does not take an assignment unless necessary to meet staffing needs. House supervisors are also present 24/7. Patient care techs are available on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening and 1:10-12 at night. RNs may troubleshoot respiratory equipment, although stable COVID cases are rare. Telemetry monitors are used, and nurses do not need to read strips, as monitoring is handled house-wide. Shifts are 12 hours long, with scheduling requests accommodated when possible. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend, with Saturday and Sunday considered weekend days. Holiday shifts are required every other holiday. Floating is required in rotation with the rest of the staff, and general unit travelers may float as needed. The unit has a two-day orientation period for training and familiarization with specific processes.
