Job Description and Duties

HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC – DIABLO RANGE DISTRICT / ALTAMONT SECTOR / CARNEGIE STATE VEHICULAR RECREATION AREA 

This classification is subject to the Post and Bid process. Applications from a certification list, transfer change in class, reinstatement, re-employment, and training and development assignment candidates will be accepted for this position but consistent with the MOU/Bargaining Agreement BU12/13 contract cannot be acted upon unless the Post & Bid process does not result in a hire.

The working schedule is Monday-Thursday, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM. 

The reporting location for this position is Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area, 18600 Corral Hollow Rd., Tracy, CA.   This position will work under the direction of the Park Maintenance Chief I.  The incumbent may be assigned to work at other park units within the Diablo Range District.

The California Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a skilled and motivated Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our small but mighty team in the Altamont Sector. This unique position supports a diverse fleet serving Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area, Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area, the Alameda Tesla Property, and the Diablo Range District Office.  This is not a position where you'll spend every day doing the same task. We need someone who can think on their feet, adapt to changing priorities, and take initiative to solve problems across a wide range of fleet maintenance, equipment management, and operational needs.

As the sector's Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will play a critical role in keeping our vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized fleet assets operating safely and efficiently. This position offers significant independence and responsibility for maintaining a diverse fleet that supports recreation, public safety, resource management, and park operations.

Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license is required. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Employees who work to support State Vehicle Recreation Areas (SVRA) utilize the OHV Trust Fund and are responsible for appropriate use of the fund and to help ensure program transparency, accountability, and compliance (TAC) goals are met.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

*Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs, or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Working Conditions

Working outdoors in various types of weather often on steep or uneven ground as required for field repairs.

Working in a shop environment around tools and chemicals such as high speed grinders, welders, saws, torches, solvents, etc.

Working in an office environment with long periods of sitting using a computer.

Special Requirements

Ability to stand, stoop, bend while lifting tools and parts required for the repair and maintenance of Mobile Equipment.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR)  , this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR  .

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Experience working on heavy equipment, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems

• Welding and fabrication experience

• Experience with computerized diagnostic systems

• Experience with fleet management programs and preventive maintenance scheduling

• BIT inspection and motor carrier compliance experience

• Experience operating heavy equipment and commercial vehicles
