Assistant General Counsel

Assistant General Counsel Responsible for providing comprehensive legal counsel to senior academic and administrative officers of the College of Southern Nevada, handling litigation, advising on compliance, and supporting the General Counsel in all legal matters affecting the institution. Responsibilities Interpret and apply constitutional, statutory, and regulatory frameworks governing the College. Respond to public record requests and agency complaints. Manage outside counsel relationships and oversee litigation in state and federal courts. Provide legal and policy advice in areas such as employment law, student affairs, intellectual property, real estate, contracts, governance, research, disabilities, drug‑free workplace, IT, copyright, defamation, civil rights, sexual harassment, promotion and tenure, and fundraising. Conduct research and grant pre‑litigation services under the guidance of the General Counsel. Assist in developing and maintaining policies that ensure compliance with Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and College procedures. Represent the College in civil, administrative, and regulatory proceedings, including federal agencies. Advising leadership on matters related to civil rights/constitutional law, contracts, tort law, employment law, dispute resolution, public records, and public/private partnerships. Support additional practice areas such as student life, compliance, labor and employment, governance, public procurement, privacy, research, accreditation, risk management, law enforcement, real estate, public finance, administrative law, threat assessment, student health and safety, hearings, policy development, and legislative matters. Maintain professional confidence in the Office of General Counsel through collaborative, respectful, and approachable client interactions. Required Qualifications Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school. Strong academic background. Admission to the Nevada State Bar in good standing. License to practice in Federal Court or ability to obtain within two months of hire. Four years of legal practice or relevant experience, including labor and employment, academic affairs, compliance, civil rights, torts, and constitutional law. Experience advising clients on complex legal issues, particularly with governmental entities. Preferred Qualifications Six or more years of legal experience in higher education and/or government law. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Nevada Public Records and Open Meeting Law. Familiarity with laws pertaining to higher education, employment law, fundraising, and philanthropy. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Comprehensive understanding of litigation processes, civil and administrative procedure, and substantive law relevant to higher education. Proficiency in legal research using a variety of tools. Contract negotiation and management, including drafting, reviewing, and interpreting diverse contracts. Regulatory compliance with federal and state statutes such as Title IX, FERPA, ADAA, and the Clery Act. Risk assessment and mitigation strategies for litigation and disputes in the educational context. Awareness of employment regulations, labor relations, faculty rights, and employee benefits. Salary Information Starting salary: $141,254 (Administrative Faculty E). Position contingent upon ongoing funding. Benefits Tuition and fee assistance for employees and families.
