Accounting Technician I

The WPCOG is seeking a highly organized, customer-focused professional to serve as an Accounting Technician I. This position is responsible for preparing accounts payable records, processing various kinds of accounts, and a variety of financial records via data entry. This position will assist with reconciling bank statements, preparing cash receipts and disbursement journals for various programs, and posting to the general ledger.

Example Of Duties

Processing accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.

Reconciling bank statements and financial records.

Preparing cash receipt and cash disbursement journals.

Posting financial transactions to the general ledger.

Maintaining accounting records and supporting documentation.

Processing payroll and payroll-related reports.

Assisting with year-end payroll activities, including W-2 preparation.

Preparing spreadsheets and financial reports for departmental use.

Assisting with state and federal financial reporting requirements.

Reviewing travel reimbursement requests for policy compliance.

Coding accounts and maintaining vendor records.

Maintaining fixed asset records and inventories.

Preparing purchase orders and maintaining departmental files.

Providing administrative and financial support to staff.

Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of established accounting principles and practices.

Working knowledge of the COG, its functions, and policies.

Working knowledge of modern office practices and equipment.

Working knowledge of the computer and up-to-date software, accounting, and data sheet programs.

Ability to operate a computer and efficiently use data sheets and accounting software programs.

Ability to accurately and rapidly type and perform data entry form work generated by a computer.

Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions, including software-related data entry requirements.

Ability to compile figures accurately and efficiently and detect and correct math and numeric errors.

Ability to prepare and maintain accounting records and reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, vendors, and co-workers.

Education & Experience

An associate's degree in accounting or

A high school diploma or GED with a minimum of one year of accounting experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted.

Western Piedmont Council of Governments is a member of the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System. This entitles you to a defined benefit at the time of retirement if you are vested with at least five years of employment. Members contribute 6% of gross compensation each month. This is a before-tax deduction. Western Piedmont Council of Governments contributes an actuarially determined percentage of the gross payroll of members each month.

Western Piedmont Council of Governments contributes 5.2% of each employee's salary to the employer-sponsored retirement plan of the employee's choosing. Additionally, WPCOG will match up to 4% of each employee's salary for a total possible employer contribution/match of 9.2%. Western Piedmont Council of Governments pays 100% of an employee's health and vision coverage (employee only). The current plan is a high-deductible health plan with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Contributions to the H.S.A. are made pre-tax through payroll deduction. Western Piedmont Council of Governments pays 100% of the following premiums:

Western Piedmont Council of Governments provides the following provisions:

• 12 paid holidays per year
• Sick leave accrues at 1 day per month (8 hours).
• Annual leave accrued on a sliding scale:

Years of Aggregate Service - Earned Hours PerMonth - Earned Days PerYear

5 years or less - 10 hours - 15 days

5+ years, less than 10 years - 12 hours - 18 days

10+ years, less than 15 years - 14 hours - 21 days

15+ years - 16 hours - 24 days

Longevity Pay is subject to annual appropriations by the WPCOG Board and may be reduced proportionately to the schedule below based on budget amounts. Paid in both July and November.

Less than 1 Year - 0.5% - 10 - 14 years - 1.75%

1 - 4 years - 1.0% - 15 - 20 years - 2.0%
