Senior Accountant

Location: This role is based in Charlotte, NC and is designed for close, in-person collaboration, with flexibility for remote work, subject to team priorities. Relocation is offered. The Duke Endowment, a private philanthropic foundation dedicated to strengthening communities across the Carolinas, is seeking a Senior Accountant to join its team. This role supports the financial operations of The Duke Endowment and The Doris Duke Trust, with responsibility across general ledger reporting, investment and custodian activity, and fixed asset management. This is a hands‑on opportunity for an early to mid‑career accounting professional seeking broader exposure than a traditional role. Reporting to the Controller, you will work across multiple areas of accounting, gain exposure to foundation and trust structures, and take ownership of meaningful work. General Ledger, Investment Accounting and Tax Manage monthly financial statement preparation for the Endowment and The Doris Duke Trust, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Liaison with custodian banks for reporting and transaction management. Records, classifies and summarizes custodian bank entries in accordance with applicable regulations and generally accepted accounting principles. Record, reconcile and monitor all general ledger transactions and accounts for The Duke Endowment and The Doris Duke Trust to ensure accuracy, completeness and audit readiness. Manage all aspects of retirement plan administration, including regulatory compliance, required reporting, and annual testing. Ensure adherence to IRS and ERISA requirements, support audit and tax-related processes, and maintain accurate participant records. Engage with plan participants and retirees to facilitate clear communication, gather required information, and ensure smooth plan operations. Support tax filing process by analyzing and sending K‑1s from investment firm to tax firm, managing tax payments, filing dates, notices, and responses. Prepare various schedules, financial statements and analysis for use by tax and audit workflows. Fixed Asset Management Oversee the fixed asset module within the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and integrity of asset-related data. Maintain a complete and accurate record of all fixed assets, including purchases, transfers, relocations, and disposals. Partner with Operations, Facilities, and IT to evaluate asset lifecycles and support long-term planning. Develop and present data visualizations and reports to support fixed‑asset analysis and decision‑making. Lead routine fixed‑asset inventories and audits to ensure compliance and proper asset stewardship. Perform asset analysis and forecasting to inform replacement schedules and budget planning. Serve as the subject‑matter expert on fixed‑asset accounting, including completing monthly depreciation and maintaining depreciation schedules for annual audit requirements. Reporting and Cross Functional Support Develop data visualizations and executive‑level summaries for internal leadership and Trustees. Translate complex financial data into clear, accessible reporting. Build and enhance reports using Excel and data visualization tools. Identify opportunities to improve processes and strengthen data integrity. Other duties as assigned, including participation in relevant professional associations and trainings. What You Need Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. An equivalent combination of experience and skills will be considered. CPA track with at least one section of the exam completed. 3 to 5+ years of accounting experience, including knowledge of GAAP, auditing principles, financial systems, and data analysis. Advanced Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and data visualization; experience with Power BI is a plus.
