Executive Director Position at Florida Diabetes CampThe Executive Director is the primary organizational leader of Florida Diabetes Camp and is responsible for advancing its mission, strengthening its infrastructure, and positioning FDC for long-term sustainability and growth.Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads organizational strategy, fundraising, financial management, staff leadership, administration, partnerships, and year-round operations. Executive Leadership, Strategy & Culture: The Executive Director will establish clear priorities, create accountability, strengthen organizational systems, and foster a professional culture built on trust, transparency, respect, safety, and shared purpose. This leader must be comfortable navigating change and having difficult conversations when necessary. Success will require emotional intelligence, consistency, sound judgment, and the ability to bring people together.2. Fundraising, Development & Partnerships: The Executive Director will lead FDC's fundraising strategy, with an emphasis on expanding philanthropy and other sustainable sources of revenue. This person will cultivate and steward current supporters while proactively developing new relationships capable of expanding FDC's reach and financial strength. As one of FDC's primary ambassadors, the Executive Director must be comfortable telling the organization's story and building authentic relationships with donors, businesses, healthcare organizations, nonprofits, foundations, and community partners throughout Florida.3. Board Partnership & Organizational Governance: The Executive Director will develop a strong, transparent working partnership with the Board of Directors, helping translate strategic priorities into measurable organizational goals. The Executive Director will support effective governance while maintaining appropriate clarity between Board and staff responsibilities. This individual should be comfortable working with highly engaged volunteer leaders.4. Team & Volunteer Leadership: FDC depends on an unusual combination of year-round employees, medical professionals, camp leaders, and deeply committed volunteers. The Executive Director will recruit, supervise, coach, and develop staff while creating a culture of accountability throughout the organization. They will lead a well-established group of longtime volunteers.5. Financial & Organizational Stewardship: The Executive Director is responsible for the sound financial and administrative management of FDC, including financial reporting, internal controls and organizational systems. Working with the Board and professional partners, the Executive Director will ensure leadership has timely, accurate information for decision-making and that resources are aligned with FDC's priorities. The Executive Director will also strengthen the systems and infrastructure needed for a sustainable nonprofit organization, including donor management and non-profit compliance.6. Camp Operations, Safety & Mission Delivery: Working closely with the Medical Director, program leadership, and staff, the Executive Director will ensure FDC's year-round camp programs are well-supported and operate in alignment with organizational, medical, safety, and regulatory standards. Responsibilities include oversight of partner facility relationships, staffing support, camper and volunteer outreach, organizational risk management, and compliance with applicable nonprofit requirements and American Camp Association standards.QualificationsThe strongest candidates will bring:At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably within a nonprofit, association, healthcare, education, youth-development, or other mission-driven organization.Demonstrated success managing people, organizational priorities, budgets, and complex stakeholder relationships.Meaningful fundraising experience that could include donor cultivation, stewardship, grants, institutional giving, corporate partnerships, or major gifts.Experience working effectively with a nonprofit Board or comparable volunteer governance structure.Strong financial literacy, including experience with budgeting, financial reporting, and organizational planning.Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.Demonstrated ability to communicate directly, manage conflict constructively, and build trust across diverse groups.Strong organizational judgment, initiative, adaptability, and strategic thinking.Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.Additional qualities that are valued but not required:Experience with type 1 diabetes, healthcare, or organizations serving children and families.Experience within camping, youth development, or experiential education.Experience with donor-management and nonprofit accounting systems.Advanced degree in nonprofit management, business administration, healthcare administration, or a related field.Existing relationships within Florida's philanthropic, healthcare, nonprofit, or business communities.We recognize that the strongest Executive Director may come from outside the camping or diabetes communities. FDC is most interested in finding a proven leader who can learn the organization, respect the expertise already present, build strong relationships, and move the organization forward.Position ExpectationsThis position is based in Gainesville, Florida, and candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the area. The work occurs in a combination of office, community, and outdoor camp environments.Frequent travel throughout Florida is required, along with evening and weekend responsibilities and attendance at FDC camp sessions and organizational events. The Executive Director must be comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions, walking and standing for extended periods, navigating uneven terrain, and occasionally lifting up to 35 pounds.Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required criminal background and sex offender registry checks.
