Current funding for this position has been renewed through the 25-26 Fiscal Year with a new expiration date of June 30, 2026. Renewed funding will be sought for next fiscal year, with the possibility of renewal and extension thereafter, subject to approval by CATPA. The Criminal Justice Section is seeking an experienced investigator to join the Special Prosecutions Unit. The primary responsibility is to investigate and prosecute multi-jurisdictional, organized and complex auto theft cases under the Attorney General’s Auto Theft Initiative (AGATI). The investigator will partner with state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies, assist the State Grand Jury, provide training and technical advice, coordinate task force intelligence sharing, and support grant compliance. What You Will Do Investigate allegations of criminal activity to determine if Colorado or federal law was violated, handling complex felony-level cases. Conduct full-service criminal investigations, independently verify allegations through interviews and evidence collection. Provide investigative and logistical assistance to federal, state, and local agencies, including the State Grand Jury. Offer instructional services, technical advice, and training to other law enforcement and regulatory professionals. Act as a liaison between AGATI and other grantees, attend intelligence‑sharing meetings, coordinate with outside law‑enforcement personnel, and aid the prosecutor with prosecution actions and grant compliance. Minimum Qualifications Six years of professional investigative experience as a full‑time sworn detective or sworn criminal investigator at the felony level for a government law‑enforcement agency, with experience filing felony-level criminal cases in court as the lead investigator. OR a combination of directly related education (Criminal Justice, Psychology, or Sociology) and professional investigative experience equal to six (6) years, with only up to four (4) years substituteable for education. Applicants must demonstrate at least two (2) years of full‑time investigative experience at the felony level. Education substitution applicants must provide copies of transcripts at the time of application. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Foreign degree holders must submit a translation or evaluation from an accredited institution. Required Competencies Organizational skills, including the ability to multi‑task, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Experience managing or leading large‑scale or complex investigations. Strong oral and written communication skills, with concise and effective communication. Customer‑service and interpersonal skills, working well on a team. Strong critical thinking and analytical skills. Preferred Qualifications Lead investigator on a minimum of 50 felony-level cases. Experience in complex investigations, including violations of the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA). Undergraduate or graduate experience in accounting, finance, or criminology (transcripts provided). Prior experience training law‑enforcement personnel. Ability to interpret and translate Spanish. Conditions of Employment Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. Candidates must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified at the time of application and comply with physical and psychological evaluations as required. Must be proficient with a handgun and have a valid CO driver’s license. Conditional job offer may require additional physical and psychological evaluation if more than three years have passed since the last evaluation. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and travel within or outside Colorado on short notice. Position may require working outside regular business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekend, and overnight assignments. This role is eligible for a flexible work arrangement: the successful candidate will work in the office three days per week with potential additional flexibility after training.
