High School Coordinator of Special Education JobID: 353 Position Type: Administration Date Posted: 5/19/2026 High School Coordinator of Special Education Reports To: Director of Special Education Work Year: 12 Months Location: Southland College Prep Position Summary The High School Coordinator of Special Education provides leadership, oversight, and coordination of special education services to ensure that students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. This leader ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting equitable access to high-quality instruction, related services, and behavioral supports. The Coordinator collaborates with teachers, service providers, families, and school leaders to support student achievement, inclusion, and postsecondary readiness. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership and Program Oversight Provide instructional and operational leadership for the high school special education program. Develop, implement, and monitor systems to ensure high-quality special education services and student outcomes. Support special education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and other assigned staff. Support a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and high expectations for students with disabilities. Lead department meetings, professional learning, and continuous improvement efforts related to special education. Compliance and Case Management Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, ADA, state regulations, and district policies. Oversee development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs, evaluation timelines, progress reports, manifestation determinations, and transition plans. Monitor caseloads, service delivery, accommodations, modifications, and documentation for accuracy and compliance. Facilitate and/or participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, reevaluations, and other special education conferences. Respond to parent concerns, complaints, and due process matters in collaboration with district leadership. Instructional Support Support teachers in designing and delivering specially designed instruction aligned to grade-level standards and student needs. Monitor classroom instruction, inclusion practices, co‑teaching models, and intervention supports. Use student achievement, behavior, attendance, and progress monitoring data to guide programming and instructional decisions. Collaborate with general education staff to ensure accommodations and supports are implemented with fidelity. Promote evidence-based practices in literacy, math, behavior, executive functioning, and transition planning. Staffing and Supervision Evaluate assigned staff in accordance with district procedures and professional practice frameworks. Provide coaching, feedback, and support plans to improve staff performance and instructional effectiveness. Participate in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of qualified special education personnel. Coordinate staff assignments to ensure student services are appropriately delivered. Family and Community Engagement Build strong partnerships with parents, guardians, and community agencies to support student success. Communicate clearly and professionally regarding student needs, programming, rights, and procedural safeguards. Coordinate with outside providers, therapeutic day schools, transition agencies, and postsecondary partners as needed. Transition and Postsecondary Planning Ensure that transition planning is embedded in student programming and aligned with postsecondary goals. Support coordination of vocational, college, career, and independent living services for students with disabilities. Collaborate with community agencies and adult service providers to support successful transitions beyond high school. Data and Reporting Maintain accurate records and prepare reports required by the school, district, and state. Analyze program data to assess compliance, service delivery, graduation outcomes, discipline trends, and student achievement. Develop action plans to address areas of need and improve program effectiveness. Qualifications Master's degree required; doctorate preferred. Valid Professional Educator License with administrative endorsement required. LBS1 or other special education credential preferred. Minimum of 3–5 years of successful experience in special education case management or leadership. Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, special education procedures, and high school programming. Experience with IEP development, compliance oversight, staff supervision, and family collaboration. Strong organizational, communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Deep understanding of special education law, procedures, and best practices. Knowledge of inclusive practices, co‑teaching, MTSS, behavior supports, and transition services. Ability to lead teams, manage competing deadlines, and maintain confidentiality. Ability to analyze data and use it to drive decisions and improve outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust among students, families, and staff. Physical Demands Ability to move throughout the building and attend meetings across the campus. Ability to perform essential duties in a school environment. School-based setting with frequent interaction with students, families, teachers, and service providers. May require attendance at evening meetings, parent conferences, or school events. Performance Expectations Maintain full compliance with all special education requirements. Improve outcomes for students with disabilities academically, behaviorally, and socially. Foster strong collaboration between general education and special education staff. Ensure timely completion of IEPs, evaluations, progress monitoring, and related documentation.
