Position Details

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding. Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration. The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool. Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities - Generally, instructors teach introductory-level courses in history. Occasionally, instructors teach upper-division courses in the same fields. Courses available vary from one semester to the next, depending on need and funding.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Minimum of a Master's Degree in History or related field, with academic background commensurate with teaching in the discipline.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Terminal degree in appropriate field. Previous teaching experience in similar courses.

Have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, and students. Demonstrate the ability to relate to and establish rapport with a college student population. Exercise good judgment and self-motivation. Maintain confidentiality of records and information. The Department - The Department of History, Philosophy as an interdisciplinary department offers two majors, tailored major options and several exciting minors, including Latin American Studies and Museum Studies. Internships at historical societies, museums and Yellowstone are also an important part of the educational experience. Undergraduate students also have opportunities to conduct research and work directly with faculty members on topics ranging from urban coyotes to the Butte mine. The department hosts both history and philosophy honor societies. At all levels of the curriculum, the department provides students with the tools to think rigorously, to research and thereby generate knowledge empirically, and to articulate their thoughts coherently. For these reasons, the department's programs are among the most sought-after in the College of Letters and Science and across campus.
