Law Clerk

Overview The MPTC comprises the judicial branch of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Government. This is a small court of general jurisdiction. The Judicial Clerk will experience multiple fields of law including questions of jurisdiction and sovereign immunity, civil litigation, family relations, probate, child welfare, labor law and contracts. Clerkship alumni have used their MPTC experience to launch successful careers in federal, state and tribal governments, courts, litigation firms and Indian Law firms. Under the supervision of the Chief Judge, the Judicial Clerk is required to: Conduct legal research on statutes and cases; analyze legal issues presented; and communicate findings of research to tribal court judges either orally or by succinct memoranda. Review legal pleadings, motions, briefs, transcripts, and recordings. Draft memoranda of decision and orders for pending Tribal Court cases. Attend hearings as requested by the tribal judges. Prepare special projects such as editing decisions for publication and developing proposed amendments to Mashantucket Rules of Civil Procedure. Passing a bar exam is not required. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court (MPTC) seeks a motivated individual who can self-manage with minimal supervision. Excellent legal writing and research skills are essential. Indian Law students are encouraged to apply, but indigenous law focus is not necessary to successfully perform this job.
