Resident Life Volunteer (age 21+) Referral
Hands On Portland
Imagine being the steady presence that brings peace, comfort, and dignity to someone’s final chapter of life. As a Resident Life Volunteer, you have the opportunity to make a profound difference. With mindful attention and compassionate care, you’ll help create an environment where love, respect, and serenity are at the center of every moment. This role is more than volunteering— it’s about being part of a circle of support that ensures no one walks through the end-of-life journey alone . Whether you’re sitting quietly with a resident, sharing music or conversation, or offering comfort to loved ones, your presence becomes a gift of connection and humanity. Key Responsibilities Sit quietly with residents, offering presence and reassurance. Help with meals, including serving food and assisting residents with eating. Support with bathing, grooming, and dressing. Assist with turning, positioning, and mobility. Prepare rooms to create a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere. Refresh linens, tidy spaces, and ensure residents’ surroundings feel calm and cared for. Assist with light housekeeping tasks such as organizing personal items, laundry, dishes, or replenishing supplies. Help maintain a soothing environment by adjusting lighting, music, or temperature. Work closely with clinical staff to respond to residents’ needs. Accompany residents outdoors when possible, offering fresh air and connection with nature. Assist in creating memory moments, such as helping families with photo albums or storytelling. COMMITMENT Four-hour shift and a minimum of 2 shifts per month for one year. Shifts available between 8am-10pm, 7 days/week. Weekend shifts and evening shifts are the highest need. Hopewell House is a licensed residential care facility dedicated to providing compassionate end-of-life care for all people, embracing diversity across generations, cultures, identities, and traditions. Our mission is to honor each resident’s journey with dignity, presence, and love, while supporting families through both grief and moments of joy. Volunteers play a vital role in this mission by offering companionship, comfort, and practical support that create a peaceful environment. Their presence ensures residents and families feel cared for, respected, and never alone during this important transition. Volunteers at Hopewell House gain meaningful experience in providing compassionate, person-centered care at the end of life. They develop skills in active listening, mindful presence, and offering emotional support to residents and families. Volunteers also learn practical caregiving skills such as assisting with meals, mobility, and creating a peaceful environment. Most importantly, they gain a deeper understanding of cultural humility, empathy, and the profound value of supporting individuals and families during life’s final transition.
