Election Worker - Office Assistant (Extra Help, Seasonal)

Election Worker - Office Assistants Full-time, seasonal positions for the November 3, 2026 Statewide General Election in San Mateo County. Candidates will work in one of the following areas: Ballot Retrieval, Vote by Mail, Voter Registration/Clerical Support, Voter Helpdesk Support, Outreach Services, Supplies, Field Techs/Warehouse. Responsibilities Ballot Retrieval: Retrieve voted ballots from Vote Centers and Ballot Drop Boxes; deliver ballots and supplies; assist with Vote by Mail processing; drive County vehicles. Vote by Mail: Retrieve ballots from local post office; drive County van; process Vote by Mail ballots; operate processing equipment; scan and adjudicate ballots. Voter Registration/Clerical Support: Data entry and database maintenance; update voter registration records; prepare and process provisional ballots; verify and process petitions and recall petitions. Voter Helpdesk Support: Assist staff over the phone; answer procedure questions; provide limited technical support; data entry. Outreach Services: Demonstrate voting equipment; register voters; present election information; outreach to local businesses and community organizations. Supplies: Inventory and pack/unpack supplies; fulfill inventory lists; record and update inventory; operate pallet jacks; accept shipments. Field Techs/Warehouse: Test and verify electronic voting equipment; assist in staging equipment and supplies; inventory and organize equipment; deliver, connect, test, and pickup equipment; provide on-site technical support. Qualifications Valid California driver’s license; able to drive County vehicles (cargo van/SUV/car). Ability to lift 25-50 lb (varies by role). Attention to detail and ability to follow detailed procedures. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) for clerical roles. English proficiency; fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog/Filipino, Korean, Burmese, Hindi, Japanese, Indonesian, Vietnamese or Thai desired for Outreach Services. Minimum one year general clerical, office assistant, or phone services experience for Voter Registration/Clerical Support. Key skills: prioritize work; coordinate multiple activities; maintain accurate files and records; follow oral and written directions. Compensation & Work Hours Hourly wage starting at $24.91; Overtime is expected. Work hours 8 am - 5 pm, Monday-Friday, with overtime, weekends, evenings, and holidays required. Total hours may vary; limit to 1,040 hours per fiscal year. Benefits Some positions eligible for ACA benefits. No guaranteed permanent status. Work is at-will; some positions reported as Extra Help.
