Lead Student Disability Specialist

Position Information The Student Disability Resources Center (SDRC) provides services for students with various permanent or temporary disabilities, including learning disorders, attention deficit disorder, autism, visual, mobility, or hearing impairments, psychological disabilities, chronic systemic disorders (e.g., lupus, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes), and injuries. As the Lead Disability Specialist, you will interpret medical documentation, assess disability forms, and determine appropriate accommodations in accordance with University, State, and Federal guidelines. You will serve as a technical leader with expertise in graduate and professional student services, ensuring institution‑wide access to educational opportunities while maintaining academic standards. You will also provide specialized counseling, facilitate support groups and workshops, give disability‑awareness presentations, and liaise with on‑ and off‑campus departments and national organizations. In addition, you will conduct research and development of training and evaluation tools, prepare written materials, and support other SDRC functions. The position often requires work during evenings and weekends, particularly during final exams, program events, and outreach activities. The full salary range for the Lead Student Disability Specialist is $73,600–$133,200 annually; the expected pay scale is up to $106,600 annually. Applicants must have current work authorization. Responsibilities Assess disability documentation, medical records, and psychological/psycho‑educational evaluations to verify disability status. Determine appropriate accommodations and support while ensuring compliance with graduate, professional, and accrediting agency standards. Provide information to students who believe they may have a disability and make referrals to campus and off‑campus resources. Offer specialized disability‑related counseling to graduate and professional students. Coordinate with campus departments and programs to explain services and facilitate support group and workshop leadership. Develop and maintain relationships with community agencies and national organizations. Perform research, develop training and evaluation tools, screening mechanisms, and teaching modules. Prepare written reports, status updates, and support other SDRC services as needed. Manage evening and weekend work during high‑demand periods. Requirements Educational Requirements Advanced degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training. PhD or PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology, or a Master’s degree in counseling psychology (or related field) with at least two years of experience as a professional psychologist. Experience Requirements Six to ten years of related experience. Professional experience in post‑secondary settings with students who have disabilities, with knowledge of support services and accommodation methods. Experience interpreting psycho‑educational and neuro‑psychiatric reports and applying findings for disability accommodations. Experience in graduate or professional programs with an understanding of policies, procedures, and technical standards. Experience in disability management or crisis management with adults with disabilities. Minimum Requirements Advanced knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques for various disabilities. Collaboration skills with individuals, departments, and organizations on and off campus. Ability to advise and lead staff in service delivery. Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Assembly Bill746. Strong oral and written communication skills. Capability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships across the institution. Interpersonal skills for working sensitively with diverse students and campus colleagues. Ability to communicate students’ accommodations to instructors and organizational entities. In-depth understanding of state and federal laws on student accommodations. Interview, training, teaching, and empowerment skills for students with disabilities. Knowledge of the Disability Compliance Office procedures. Organizational and instructional skills for workshops and support groups. Counseling skills for disability management and compensatory strategies. Expertise in interpreting complex academic policies and support services. Preferred Qualifications Working knowledge of accessible technology, including adaptive computer technology and specialized software. Advanced proficiency with assessment instruments and psycho‑educational reports used for diagnosing learning disabilities in adults (e.g., Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test, Woodcock‑Johnson Tests, Wechsler Individual Achievement Test), and ability to interpret results for service eligibility. Knowledge of University of California and UCR policies related to these duties. Employment Terms Salary Range: $73,600–$133,200 annually (expected pay up to $106,600).
