Position Overview

Our organization is seeking qualified candidates for a faculty role within the Department of Pediatrics, specifically in the Division of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. This opportunity is available at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level and includes the pivotal role of Director for the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Program, following an upcoming retirement. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual dedicated to excellence in clinical care, education, quality enhancement, and advocacy, while also engaging in a robust portfolio of clinical trials. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in general pediatric pulmonary medicine, particularly with a focus on cystic fibrosis. Responsibilities will encompass both inpatient and outpatient pediatric pulmonology activities alongside leading the Cystic Fibrosis program. The rank, track, and compensation will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications.

Team and Program Highlights

The division currently comprises six pediatric pulmonologists supported by a dedicated team, including two nurse practitioners, three RN clinical coordinators, and two administrative staff members. Our cystic fibrosis program stands as the largest in Virginia, featuring a highly engaged team committed to formal quality improvement initiatives, including participation in the CF Learning Network. We are an active site for clinical trials within the CFF Therapeutics Development Network, conducting multiple observational and interventional studies, and we collaborate closely with our Department of Radiology on hyperpolarized gas imaging applications. Additionally, we are one of only eighteen accredited care centers for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and one of twenty-eight Certified Duchenne Care Centers nationwide. Our multidisciplinary care clinics cater to complex cases, including technology-dependent children, patients with neuromuscular disorders, premature infants, and those facing pulmonary complications from congenital heart disease. We also operate one of the largest accredited pediatric sleep labs in Virginia and are expanding our aerodigestive program.

Research Opportunities

From a research standpoint, our division hosts an RO1-funded asthma research initiative that investigates adaptive and specific mucosal immune responses to viral infections. There are numerous opportunities for collaboration with both basic science and clinical departments on campus, as well as with our newly established School of Data Science, which emphasizes the use of "big data" analysis. Our Child Health Research Center provides a collaborative framework for scientific inquiry.

Patient Care and Education

Patient care is delivered at our state-of-the-art outpatient facility located in Charlottesville, complemented by several satellite programs. Our outpatient services are supported by an active inpatient consultation service. We play a significant role in educating medical students and pediatric residents, and our residency training program is recognized for its excellence.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a board certification or be board eligible in pediatric pulmonary medicine and possess an M.D. degree or its equivalent.
