Job Description Job Description About the Opportunity An established Los Angeles civil defense litigation firm is seeking a law clerk to support its litigation team on active matters. The firm represents insured and self-insured clients across manufacturing, transportation, retail, hospitality, and public entity sectors, handling cases from initial investigation through trial. This is a substantive role, not an administrative one. Law clerks here work directly alongside associates and partners on live files, and the work product you produce is used in real matters. If you are looking for exposure to how civil defense litigation actually functions day to day, this position provides it. The firm is open to candidates at several stages: current law students, recent graduates awaiting bar results, and licensed attorneys who are not yet admitted in California. What You'll Do Research and Writing Conduct legal research on liability, damages, procedural, and evidentiary questions across a range of practice areas Draft internal memoranda summarizing research findings and recommended positions Prepare initial drafts of pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and correspondence for attorney review Cite-check and verify authority in filings before submission Case Support and Analysis Summarize deposition transcripts and identify testimony relevant to case themes and defenses Review and chronologize medical records, employment files, and other voluminous productions Organize and analyze discovery materials, including document productions and written responses Assist in assembling exhibits and preparing materials for motions and trial Direct Litigation Exposure Work directly with associates and partners on active matters from assignment through resolution Attend and observe depositions, law and motion hearings, mediations, and trial preparation sessions Participate in case strategy discussions and internal file reviews Support attorneys during trial preparation, including witness preparation and exhibit management What We're Looking For Required Currently enrolled in, or a graduate of, an accredited law school Strong legal research skills, including proficiency with Westlaw, Lexis, or comparable platforms Clear, precise legal writing with careful attention to detail and citation accuracy Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and deliver under deadline pressure Professional judgment and discretion in handling confidential client information Reliable in-person attendance at the Los Angeles office Preferred, Not Required Prior litigation, law firm, or judicial externship experience Familiarity with California Code of Civil Procedure and California discovery practice Exposure to insurance defense, personal injury, premises liability, or products liability matters Experience reviewing medical records or technical documentation Comfort with document review platforms and case management software What You'll Gain Hands-on experience across the full litigation lifecycle rather than a single narrow phase Direct mentorship from practicing litigators who review and give feedback on your work product Exposure to a diverse caseload spanning multiple industries and defense postures A working understanding of how insurers, self-insured clients, and defense counsel coordinate on active matters Writing samples and practical experience that translate directly to associate-level work Schedule and Logistics Part-time and full-time arrangements are both available Part-time schedules can be built around a law school course load This is an in-person position based in Los Angeles, California Start date is flexible #J-18808-Ljbffr
