Senior Staff Accountant

About the Opportunity Our client is an established engineering and environmental consulting firm with approximately 400 professionals across planning, engineering, design and environmental disciplines. They are seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to join their New York finance team. This is a broad accounting position combining month-end close, financial reporting and audit support with exposure to project revenue, WIP, job costing and project profitability. The role is ideal for an experienced Senior Accountant who understands the financial mechanics of a project-based professional services business and can work closely with both accounting and operational teams. Responsibilities Prepare and review journal entries, including accruals, prepaids and allocations. Coordinate monthly, quarterly and year-end close activities. Prepare general ledger, bank and balance-sheet reconciliations. Support financial statement preparation, management reporting and variance analysis. Review percentage-of-completion and time-and-materials revenue recognition. Analyze WIP, deferred revenue and project profitability. Partner with Project Accountants and Project Managers on budgets, forecasts and project financial performance. Support annual audits, tax preparation and other regulatory audits. Maintain compliance with GAAP, internal controls and company accounting policies. Identify opportunities to improve reporting, accounting workflows and internal controls. Support ERP enhancements, automation and wider finance projects. Provide guidance and support to junior accounting staff. Ideal Background Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field. Five to eight years of progressive accounting experience. Professional services, engineering, architecture or consulting experience preferred. Strong month-end close and general-ledger accounting experience. Understanding of revenue recognition, WIP, job costing and project-based accounting. Experience preparing or supporting financial statements and audits. Deltek Vision, Deltek Vantagepoint or comparable ERP experience preferred. CPA certification or active CPA track is beneficial. Strong Excel, analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to manage competing deadlines and collaborate across departments.
