Hazardous Materials Specialist I (Fire District)

Hazardous Materials Specialist I positions are offered within the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District Office of the Fire Marshal. This role interprets and implements hazardous materials laws and regulations, while performing inspections and investigations of facilities handling hazardous materials. Applicants may also consider applying for Hazardous Materials Specialist Trainee or Hazardous Materials Specialist II positions. Responsibilities Interpret and enforce hazardous materials laws and regulations. Conduct inspections of over 7,000 regulated facilities, including hazardous waste generators, operators of underground storage tanks, and other hazardous material facilities. Perform investigations related to hazardous material incidents. Prepare inspection reports, recommendations, and enforcement actions. Educate facility personnel on compliance requirements. Minimum Requirements Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) issued by the State of California Department of Public Health. Proof of current REHS registration must be submitted with the application. Desired Qualifications Experience working in a hazardous materials environment. Proficient use of Microsoft Office. Knowledge of the California Environmental Reporting System (CERS) and EnvisionConnect software. Conditions of Employment Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license. Proof of automobile liability insurance required; mileage reimbursement is available. Successful background check required prior to assignment. Eligible for promotion to Hazardous Materials Specialist II after meeting minimum requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report; promotion must occur within 12 months or employment will be terminated.
