Collections Specialist

Atrium is seeking on behalf of our client a Collections Specialist based in Hackensack, NJ. A background check may be run only after a conditional offer is made, where permitted by law. Position: Collections Specialist Location: Hackensack, NJ Employment Type: Full-time Compensation: $65-75k Position Overview The Collections Specialist will manage the end-to-end collections process, ensuring timely resolution of outstanding accounts while maintaining compliance with legal and organizational standards. This role involves close collaboration with internal teams, outside counsel, and external stakeholders to resolve disputes, support litigation, and optimize recovery efforts. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Responsibilities Manage the collections process from pre-litigation through resolution, ensuring timely follow-up and compliance Prepare and distribute demand letters, default notices, settlement agreements, and related correspondence Coordinate payment arrangements and monitor ongoing account activity to ensure adherence to agreements Partner with internal departments to resolve billing disputes and outstanding balances efficiently Maintain professional communication with tenants, outside counsel, and internal stakeholders to facilitate resolution Assist with drafting and reviewing legal documentation including pleadings, motions, affidavits, claims, and court filings Coordinate litigation workflow and maintain case calendars, deadlines, and hearing schedules Support outside counsel with documentation, exhibits, and case management for litigation and bankruptcy matters Maintain accurate legal and collections records within case management systems and prepare internal reporting Conduct asset and background research to support recovery efforts and organize legal correspondence Required Experience/Skills 3+ years of experience in legal collections, litigation support, bankruptcy, or related legal/accounting functions Strong understanding of court procedures, legal documentation, and collections processes Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously Strong written and verbal communication skills for professional correspondence and negotiations Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal case management software Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and compliance Preferred Experience/Skills Prior experience supporting a corporate legal department or law firm Familiarity with bankruptcy filings and post-judgment enforcement processes Experience coordinating with outside counsel and managing litigation workflows Paralegal certification or related legal education is a plus Education Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Legal Studies, or related field preferred Paralegal certification or coursework in legal procedures is advantageous Continuing education in collections, litigation, or bankruptcy law is a plus Strong emphasis on legal compliance and financial principles through formal or informal training Benefits If eligible under the ACA, medical, dental and vision benefits and time off in accordance with local paid sick time laws will be offered.
