Junior Staff Accountant

Job Summary


Moon Valley Nurseries' Corporate Office is seeking an experienced Junior Staff Accountant to join our dynamic Accounting Team. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional with a strong background in retail industry accounting. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for performing key accounting functions including bank and journal reconciliations, sales tax reporting, balance sheet reconciliations, and expense reviews. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting skills, advanced Excel abilities, and a solid understanding of GAAP.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare and review daily journal entries and reconciliations.
• Perform monthly bank reconciliations across multiple accounts and entities.
• Maintain accuracy of the general ledger, including balance sheet accounts.
• Manage sales tax accounting, reporting, and compliance for multiple states.
• Perform detailed expense analysis to identify variances and trends.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals, adjustments, and reporting.
• Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for internal and external audits.
• Contribute to the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
• Collaborate with managers and department leaders to provide financial insights and support decision-making.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and efficiency.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• 1-3 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the retail industry.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting best practices.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, and indexing.
• Experience with ERP/accounting and POS systems (Microsoft Dynamics GP, Oracle Xstore or similar).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across departments.

Education


Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.

Physical requirements/Working Conditions


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 15 pounds. Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in possibly extreme conditions, including rain, heat, sun, and wind.
