Position Overview

MOGEL is partnering with a professional services firm to hire an organized, analytical, and intellectually curious Senior Accountant . This is a hands-on opportunity to take ownership of core accounting operations while contributing to the financial insights, reporting, and processes that support the firm's continued growth.

Candidates must currently reside in the Phoenix metropolitan area or be willing to relocate to the area to be considered for this opportunity.

Working as part of a lean, collaborative team, the Senior Accountant will oversee the month-end close, maintain general ledger integrity, and prepare financial reporting used by management and leadership. The role offers broad exposure beyond traditional accounting responsibilities, including KPI and Board reporting, budgeting and forecasting, audit and tax preparation, internal controls, and cross-functional projects.

This position is well suited for an accounting professional who enjoys both the technical details and the bigger picture. Key Responsibilities

Accounting and Month-End Close

• Own the month-end close process, ensuring accounting activities are completed accurately and on schedule.

• Prepare and review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and supporting schedules.

• Maintain the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger and investigate reconciling items through resolution.

• Analyze account activity, identify unusual balances or variances, and determine when additional investigation is warranted.

• Apply GAAP appropriately and research unfamiliar accounting matters to develop well-supported conclusions.

• Prepare meaningful variance analysis that explains the underlying drivers of financial results, not simply restates the numbers.

Financial Reporting and Analysis

• Prepare recurring KPI reports, scorecards, and financial reporting packages used by management and the Board.

• Maintain the data, trackers, and supporting information behind KPIs and dashboards, ensuring reporting remains accurate, current, and reliable.

• Develop clear, polished financial reports and supplemental analyses for internal stakeholders and client service teams.

• Work with colleagues to understand the business questions behind reporting requests and deliver analysis that supports informed decisions.

• Ask thoughtful clarifying questions to identify key issues, define the scope of an analysis, and ensure deliverables meet stakeholder needs.

Budgeting, Forecasting, Audit, and Internal Controls

• Support annual budgeting and rolling forecasting processes, including maintaining models, incorporating actual results, and preparing variance commentary.

• Coordinate the preparation of schedules and supporting documentation for annual audits and tax filings.

• Respond to requests from external auditors and tax professionals completely, accurately, and on schedule.

• Execute established internal controls over financial reporting and maintain clear supporting documentation.

• Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, improve documentation, and reduce reliance on manual or fragile processes.

• Look for ways to make recurring accounting, audit, and tax activities more efficient with each cycle.

Systems and Process Improvement

• Develop a strong understanding of the systems, data, and processes that support accounting and financial reporting.

• Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, automate manual tasks, and improve the reliability of recurring processes.

• Contribute to future accounting system upgrades, reporting enhancements, and AI-enabled initiatives.

• Explore new tools and technologies to solve increasingly complex problems while maintaining accuracy, data security, and human accountability.

• Work with internal stakeholders and external vendors to address system-related issues and support vendor performance and accountability.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Special Projects

• Build effective working relationships with colleagues across departments and contribute to a collaborative, service-oriented environment.

• Support ad hoc financial analyses and business initiatives that require analytical thinking, discretion, and sound judgment.

• Assist with special projects that may include insurance renewals, system conversions, office operations, and other cross-functional priorities.

• Handle sensitive financial, compensation, and personnel information with appropriate confidentiality and discretion.

• Adapt to changing priorities and take ownership of projects that may require independent research, problem-solving, and follow-through.

• Own the month-end close and keep it running on schedule without requiring senior leaders to manage the process.

• Identify unusual activity and potential issues early, communicating findings before they become larger problems.

• Produce accurate, well-supported work that requires minimal correction and allows reviewers to focus on judgment rather than basic errors.

• Deliver clear, polished reporting and analysis that management can use with minimal revision.

• Ask clarifying questions early and communicate proactively when priorities, assumptions, or requirements need to be addressed.

• Research unfamiliar technical questions independently and present thoughtful, well-supported recommendations when escalation is necessary.

• Understand the business context behind financial data and use sound judgment to determine where deeper analysis will have the greatest impact.

• Improve recurring processes over time, making them more efficient, accurate, consistent, and better documented.

• Build strong working relationships across the firm and become a trusted resource for colleagues.

• Approach new assignments with intellectual curiosity, initiative, and a focus on solving the underlying business problem.

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting or finance.

• 3+ years of public accounting or private-industry accounting experience, including hands-on experience with the full month-end close cycle.

• Strong working knowledge of GAAP and full-cycle accounting.

• Experience with general ledger maintenance, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting.

• Ability to research unfamiliar accounting questions, develop supportable conclusions, and communicate findings clearly.

• Advanced Excel skills and comfort learning accounting systems, reporting platforms, and business intelligence tools.

• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities, including sound judgment around materiality and prioritization.

• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy under deadline pressure.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial results in plain English.

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with fluid responsibilities, shifting priorities, and assignments that may not come with detailed instructions.

• A collaborative, service-oriented approach and the ability to build productive working relationships across departments.

• Ability to handle confidential financial, compensation, and personnel information with discretion.

• Current residence in the Phoenix metropolitan area or willingness to relocate to the area.

• Ability to successfully complete a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA designation or active progress toward CPA licensure.

• Experience preparing KPI reports, management scorecards, Board reporting packages, or other recurring financial reports.

• Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, or variance analysis.

• Experience supporting external audits, tax preparation, and internal control processes.

• Experience working in a small or midsize organization or professional services environment with broad, hands-on accounting responsibilities.

• Familiarity with accounting systems, reporting platforms, and business intelligence tools.

• Interest in process automation, accounting technology, and responsible adoption of AI-enabled tools.

• Experience improving workflows, documenting procedures, or supporting accounting system upgrades and conversions.

• Work Arrangement: Onsite, Monday through Friday

• Location: Scottsdale office

• Compensation: Total compensation range of $115,000-$130,000
