Position Summary

The Managing Attorney of the Saturday Lawyer Program (SLP) provides leadership and oversight for AVLF’s longest-running program, which connects tenants experiencing landlord-tenant issues with volunteer attorneys for legal advice and representation. This position oversees the day-to-day operations of SLP, supervises program staff, leads three Saturday clinics each month, and ensures that clients and volunteers receive the support necessary for effective service delivery.

SLP operates one in-person and two virtual clinics each month. During the in-person clinic, volunteer attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and law students meet with potential clients, provide legal advice, and assist with drafting documents. During the virtual clinics, volunteer attorneys screen potential clients and, when appropriate, accept cases for ongoing representation.

The Managing Attorney provides legal guidance and ongoing support to volunteer attorneys throughout their representation of SLP clients, assists with complex client and case-related matters, and promotes consistent, high-quality legal services. The position also plays a key role in cultivating and maintaining AVLF’s relationships with the legal community by recruiting and engaging volunteers and developing connections with organizations and partners aligned with AVLF’s mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Management & Saturday Lawyer Clinics — 35%

• Oversee, manage, and administer the day-to-day operations of the Saturday Lawyer Program.
• Assess and manage potential client matters and determine the appropriate service track, including advice calls, workshops, and virtual appointments.
• Review client intakes and oversee the assignment and progression of cases through the program.
• Provide guidance to AVLF staff regarding advice calls, client inquiries, and changes in client circumstances.
• Plan, coordinate, and lead three Saturday Lawyer clinics each month.
• Oversee clinic preparation, including volunteer presentations, client case summaries, and volunteer assignments.
• Conduct volunteer orientations, welcome clients, and provide guidance to volunteers and clients throughout clinics.
• Lead post-clinic volunteer debriefs and ensure appropriate follow-up, documentation, and Salesforce data entry.

Volunteer Recruitment, Engagement & Support — 25%

• Provide ongoing legal guidance, resources, and support to volunteer attorneys handling SLP matters.
• Consult with volunteer attorneys regarding case strategy, client issues, and other matters arising during representation.
• Troubleshoot challenges involving volunteer-client communication and facilitate reconnection when communication has been interrupted.
• Develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain volunteer attorneys.
• Recruit volunteers through presentations, trainings, networking opportunities, legal community events, and other outreach activities.
• Represent AVLF and SLP at law firms, bar associations, and other legal community events to promote volunteer engagement and strengthen relationships with the legal community.
• Maintain and cultivate relationships with current and prospective volunteers.

Client Legal Services — 15%

• Provide legal guidance, advice, and, when appropriate, direct representation to SLP clients.
• Conduct legal advice calls with clients.
• Provide direct legal representation in limited circumstances based on program needs and case considerations.
• Address client concerns related to volunteer representation and assist with resolving issues when appropriate.

Program Evaluation & Process Improvement- 10 %

• Evaluate program operations and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, service delivery, and client and volunteer experience.
• Solicit feedback from staff and other stakeholders and implement appropriate process improvements.
• Partner with the Senior Program Data & Evaluation Manager to strengthen Salesforce processes, data quality, and program evaluation.
• Monitor program metrics and outcomes and provide program data and information in response to Development and organizational reporting needs

Dollars for Judgments Program — 5%

• Oversee and administer the Dollars for Judgments (DFJ) Program.
• Supervise the paralegal supporting DFJ and oversee case referrals and program workflow.
• Manage client and volunteer expectations and maintain relationships with volunteer attorneys participating in the program

Staff Supervision & Administrative Responsibilities — 10%

• Supervise assigned AVLF staff members and interns, including providing ongoing guidance, feedback, coaching, and support.
• Establish expectations and monitor staff performance, workload, and professional development.
• Conduct regular supervisory check-ins and participate in AVLF's performance management process.
• Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of program and case records in Salesforce and other AVLF systems.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license to practice law in Georgia.
• At least five (5) years of relevant legal experience.
• Experience representing tenants, litigating landlord-tenant matters, and/or providing legal services to low-income clients strongly preferred.
• Experience working with pro-bono volunteers and/or serving as a pro-bono attorney strongly preferred.
• Prior program management and/or supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of Georgia landlord-tenant law and familiarity with legal issues affecting tenants.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and providing legal services to low-income individuals and communities.
• Strong legal analysis, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort with public speaking, presentations, and facilitating trainings.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients, staff, volunteers, law firms, community partners, and other stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment.
• Ability to effectively supervise, coach, and support staff and interns.
• Ability to recruit, engage, and support volunteer attorneys and other legal professionals.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communicate professionally with a wide range of constituencies.
• Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and sound judgment when responding to changing program and client needs.
• Comfortable learning and using new technology; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel required. Experience with Salesforce or other case management/database systems preferred.
• Ability to work three Saturdays per month, including one in-person and two virtual Saturday Lawyer clinics.

Working Conditions: 

Work is generally performed remotely and in office environments, with travel to meetings, community sites, and client-related activities as needed. Work may involve a fast-paced environment requiring multitasking, prolonged sitting and/or standing, and occasional evening or weekend availability to support meetings, outreach activities, trainings, or client needs.
