Position Summary:
The Ultrasound Technologist performs high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations under the direction of the Radiologist, Lead Ultrasound Technologist, Chief Ultrasound Technologist, and Technical Director. This role is responsible for providing exceptional patient care, producing accurate diagnostic images, and supporting efficient departmental operations in a fast-paced outpatient environment.
The Ultrasound Technologist works collaboratively with physicians, radiologists, providers, and clinical staff to ensure timely, accurate, and patient-centered imaging services. In addition to scanning responsibilities, this role shares accountability for departmental workflow support activities, equipment functionality, probe reprocessing, policy adherence, and schedule pre-screening when assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with departmental protocols, physician orders, and accreditation standards.
• Obtain and document relevant patient history and clinical information related to the examination.
• Verify patient identity and exam orders prior to performing procedures.
• Explain procedures to patients and provide appropriate positioning to ensure comfort and cooperation.
• Acquire and document diagnostic-quality images for radiologist interpretation.
• Recognize and document findings within scope of practice.
• Complete all required patient and exam documentation, paperwork, and system entries in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner in accordance with departmental standards.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
Workflow Management and Operational Support:
• Manage assigned workload efficiently while maintaining high standards of patient care and imaging quality.
• Adapt to changing schedules, add-on examinations, and fluctuating patient volumes in a fast-paced environment.
• Participate in schedule pre-screening when assigned to ensure appropriate exam preparation, protocol selection, and workflow readiness.
• Communicate scheduling concerns, delays, or operational issues to the Lead Technologist or appropriate leadership.
• Collaborate with staff, providers, radiologists, and administrative personnel to support efficient patient flow.
Quality Assurance, Compliance, and Probe Reprocessing:
• Adhere to all departmental ultrasound policies, protocols, and accreditation standards.
• Participate in the application, maintenance, and consistent follow-through of ultrasound policies and procedures.
• Perform probe cleaning, high-level disinfection, disinfectant solution preparation and changes, reprocessing, storage, and documentation in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, infection prevention standards, and departmental policies.
• Ensure strict compliance with all probe reprocessing requirements, including proper use, dilution, expiration monitoring, replacement, and handling of disinfectant solutions used in high-level disinfection processes.
• Maintain compliance with patient safety practices, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements at all times.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and competency validation as assigned.
• Maintain accurate and complete documentation in PACS, EMR, and related systems.
Equipment and Resource Management:
• Perform routine equipment checks to ensure proper functionality and image quality.
• Identify and promptly report equipment malfunctions or performance concerns.
• Initiate and document service requests for ultrasound equipment malfunctions and communicate issues to the Lead Technologist and/or leadership for resolution.
• Maintain ultrasound rooms, probes, and supplies in a clean, organized, and patient-ready condition.
• Follow established protocols for equipment care, cleaning, and preventive maintenance.
Communication and Customer Service:
• Provide compassionate, professional, and patient-centered care at all times.
• Communicate effectively with patients, providers, radiologists, and team members.
• Address patient questions and concerns in a professional and respectful manner.
• Promote a positive, collaborative, and service-oriented work environment.
• Assist team members as needed to support department operations.
• Assist with onboarding support by answering routine workflow and process questions from new hires as directed by leadership.
• Support the clinical education of ultrasound students by assisting with basic instruction, workflow orientation, and supervised scanning experiences as appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education and Certification:
• Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program or equivalent experience.
• ARDMS registry eligible required; must meet ACR certification requirements with at least one of the following specialties: AB, OB/GYN, PS, or RVT.
• Current BLS certification required.
