Company Description Project HOPE Boston is a community-based organization that partners with women and families in the Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods to support their journeys out of poverty. Since 1981, the organization has provided direct services including family shelter, housing search assistance, workforce development, education programs, and a family childcare network to help families overcome homelessness and financial insecurity. These programs serve hundreds of families each year, addressing barriers such as housing instability, limited access to affordable childcare, and transportation challenges. While neighborhood infrastructure has improved over the past four decades, many residents still face significant socioeconomic obstacles, and Project HOPE works alongside community partners to ensure residents benefit from job growth and economic opportunity. Role Description The Senior Accountant is a full-time, hybrid role based in Boston, MA, with flexibility for some work from home. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and reconciliations. The Senior Accountant prepares and reviews financial statements, supports budgeting and forecasting processes, and ensures accurate and timely month-end and year-end closings. The role also manages accounts payable and receivable functions, assists with grant and contract reporting, and supports annual audits by coordinating documentation and responding to auditor inquiries. In addition, the Senior Accountant helps strengthen internal controls, collaborates with program staff on financial questions, and contributes to process improvements that support the organization’s mission-driven work. Qualifications Strong technical accounting skills, including general ledger management, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Experience with budgeting, forecasting, grant or contract financial reporting, and audit support in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment. Proficiency with accounting software and Excel, including creating reports, analyzing data, and ensuring data integrity. Knowledge of GAAP and internal control best practices, with attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and compliance. Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues and work across diverse teams. Strong organizational and time-management abilities, including managing multiple deadlines, prioritizing tasks, and working independently in a hybrid setting. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or progress toward certification is a plus. Several years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector or social services organizations.
