Accountant

St. John’s Ministries is a community-supported non-profit organization committed to making a positive impact in service to those experiencing homelessness in our community. We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to join our team and help manage our financial operations with integrity and transparency.

Position Overview:

The Accountant position will play a crucial role in maintaining the financial health of our organization. This position involves managing day-to-day accounting tasks, ensuring compliance with non-profit accounting standards, and providing accurate financial information to support decision-making processes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with non-profit accounting standards and regulations.


• Manage all accounting transactions, including accounts payable and receivable, donations, and grants.


• Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual closings.


• Reconcile bank statements and ensure financial data is accurate and up-to-date.


• Prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, including donors and grantors.


• Assist in budget preparation and financial planning.


• Ensure timely and accurate filing of tax returns and compliance with IRS regulations for non-profits.


• Maintain and update financial databases and software.


• Collaborate with other departments to ensure financial operations run smoothly.


• Provide support during audits and implement audit recommendations.

Other Duties:

• Ability to work an occasional shelter shift and perform guest-related duties during Drop-In days.


• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience : 

• Associates degree in accounting, finance, or related field required. 

• Minimum 2 years of relevant accounting experience. 

Skills and Abilities

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 


• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 


• Proven time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines. 


• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 


• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. 


• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks Online. 


• Comfortability with people presenting with issues related to mental health challenges, substance abuse, trauma, low-income and/or homelessness, and/or experience in a healthcare setting. 


• Passion for the mission and population served by St. John’s Ministries. 


• Ability to report to work at our various locations.

Physical Demands:

• Work Location : Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.


• Computer Use : Perform administrative tasks involving typing and computer use.

Work Environment:

• Professional Setting : Operate in a professional office environment using standard office equipment.


• Safety Protocols : Follow safety protocols, including the use of PPE, to minimize health risks.


• Supplies : Cleaning supplies are utilized to help prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses, ensuring a healthier environment for everyone.
