Correctional Treatment Specialist (Specialty Treatment Program Specialist - FIT)

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities. To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Basic Requirements: A. Degree – includes at least 24 semester hours of coursework in the behavioral or social sciences. B. Combination of education and experience – includes at least 24 semester hours of coursework in the behavioral or social sciences, and provides applicants with knowledge of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a 4‑year degree as shown in A above. Evaluation of Education: Courses such as sociology, correctional administration, criminal justice, government/political science, psychology, social work, counseling, and other related social or behavioral science courses may be used to satisfy the 24‑semester‑hour requirement. Evaluation of Experience: Experience must have been gained in (1) casework in a correctional institution or another criminal justice setting; (2) counseling in any setting that required diagnostic or treatment planning skills to achieve specific social or occupational goals; or (3) work treating persons in need of social rehabilitation. Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must have: Education GL‑09: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent. GS‑11: Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. Graduate education must have been in corrections or a related field such as criminal justice, sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, or other related coursework. Experience GL‑09: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. Examples include providing group and individual mental health, substance use, or trauma treatment services; preparing reports that analyze data from multiple sources; developing discharge reports and follow‑up treatment for inmates preparing to release to the community; and developing and presenting multi‑session presentations or lectures to groups. GS‑11: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. Examples include facilitating individual and group sessions for inmates in an evidence‑based treatment program; applying evidence‑based assessment and treatment techniques to achieve treatment goals; and possessing knowledge of principles and theories of human behavior and mental health disorders to provide treatment for inmate groups in a treatment program. Combination of Education and Experience Applicants must also possess a combination of successfully completed graduate‑level education and specialized experience that equips them with the qualifications to perform the major duties of this position. Selective Placement Factor Applicants must also possess one of the following selective placement factors. Failure to meet one of these factors will result in ineligibility. GL‑09: Twelve semester hours of graduate coursework specific to substance use disorders and/or mental illness, or twelve months of professional experience counseling substance use disorders and/or mental illness. GS‑11: Fifteen semester hours of graduate coursework specific to substance use disorders and/or mental illness, or eighteen months of professional experience counseling substance use disorders and/or mental illness. Credit may be given for paid and unpaid experience if the actual time is demonstrated.
