About the Senior Accountant Role:
Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant is a key member of the Finance team responsible for maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of BRIC's accounting operations and financial reporting. This role supports the monthly and year-end close processes, strengthens internal controls, ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, and partners across the organization to deliver reliable financial information that supports sound decision-making.
What You’ll Do in the Role: The Senior Accountant will be responsible for the following, in addition to other projects as assigned by Senior Director, Finance:
General Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Support day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, net assets, cash activity, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare and post journal entries, including recurring entries, accruals, reclasses, payroll-related entries, depreciation, prepaid expenses, and other month-end adjustments.
- Coordinate the monthly and year-end close processes by preparing journal entries, reconciliations, supporting schedules, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed asset activity, revenue recognition, receivables, payables, net asset activity, and other required analyses to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Review general ledger activity and assigned account reconciliations to ensure transactions are complete, accurate, properly supported, and coded correctly by account, department, program, grant, and funding source, as applicable.
- Reconcile and maintain assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts, including bank accounts, payroll liabilities, prepaid and accrued expenses, investments, fixed assets, receivables, payables, revenue accounts, and other general ledger accounts.
Compliance, Audit & Internal Controls
- Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting activity to ensure accuracy, proper coding, required approvals, complete supporting documentation, and appropriate allocation of costs across departments, programs, grants, and restricted funding sources.
- Support the annual financial statement audit and other regulatory filings by preparing audit schedules, reconciliations, supporting documentation, and information required for Form 990, CHAR500, and other compliance reporting.
- Maintain accounting documentation and financial records in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, funder requirements, internal controls, and organizational policies.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen accounting processes, internal controls, documentation, reconciliation procedures, and overall Finance team efficiency.
Financial Analysis & Team Collaboration
- Prepare financial analyses and supporting schedules for management reporting, budget-to-actual reviews, Finance Committee materials, and other internal reporting needs.
- Foster a collaborative Finance team culture that promotes accuracy, accountability, confidentiality, continuous improvement, and exceptional customer service.

- Experience and Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required or strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 4–6 years of relevant accounting experience ; nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, payroll accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and audit support.
- Experience with Sage Intacct or a similar accounting system preferred.
- CPA or CPA-track experience preferred but not required.
- Strong Excel skills and ability to work with financial reports, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- High level of attention to detail, accuracy, accountability, and follow-through.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good judgment and ability to evaluate issues, identify solutions, and escalate matters appropriately.
- Commitment to process, procedures, documentation, confidentiality, and internal controls.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Finance colleagues and staff across the organization.

- Compensation: The annual salary range for this position is $60K - $70K.
- Status and location : This is a full-time, exempt role based in our Brooklyn office.
