Research Associate: Sr. Biocurator (Thaxton)

Position Summary The Research Associate/ Senior Biocurator position will support ongoing curation efforts for the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) research program directed by Dr. Jonathan Berg. The role involves assisting ClinGen working groups and expert panels with data collection and analysis from literature curation to enable assessment of the relationships between genes, variants, and clinical diagnoses. The candidate will participate in local meetings and conference calls with international domain experts, learn and implement the curation framework, track progress of curation projects, and provide feedback on curation toolsets. Major responsibilities include translating and integrating genetic information from primary literature and data from online genetic databases into biocuration databases to support genomic medicine research. Minimum Education And Experience Requirements Relevant post‑Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience may substitute. May require terminal degree and licensure. Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience A Master’s degree in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field is required. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience PhD in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field is preferred. Ability to lead or contribute to the preparation of publications and reports, make presentations within the department and/or at professional conferences, and contribute to and lead exchange of research information through demonstration and instruction. Well‑versed in genetics and genomic medicine. Experience in managing small development groups or supervising junior team members. Ability to comprehend and apply complex curation processes, read and critically evaluate research literature, assess state of knowledge of genetic relationships, and evaluate evidence strength. Ability to work independently with strong communication with UNC‑based curation task force and external collaborators. Knowledge of scientific principles of biology, the central dogma, basic understanding of physiology and disease. Familiarity with online genetic databases such as OMIM, ClinVar, and LOVD; basic Excel and database usage preferred. Effective verbal and written communication, analytical and problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and high professional standards.
