The Graduate School of Education at California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Counseling and College Student Personnel (CSP) in the Department of Counselor Education, beginning in Fall of 2027. The Department of Counselor Education prepares ethical, empathic, and socially responsible counselors and leaders to be advocates foraccess, equity, and inclusion in educational institutions through acritically reflective curriculum rooted in social change andcommunity engagement. Over 85% of students within the Department ofCounselor Education identify as racially minoritized students, and75% are the first in their families to graduate with a bachelor'sdegree. The department offers master's degrees in both Counselingand College Student Personnel (higher education and student affairscounseling; CSP) and Counseling and Pupil Personnel Services (K-12school counseling; PPS). In particular, this newly hired personwill be responsible for teaching in our online CSP master's programas well as serve as the program director for this program. Basic Function Under the direction of the Dean and Department Chair, the Assistant Professor is responsible for providing academic instruction tostudents for their assigned graduate courses. The Assistant Professor is to serve as program director of the online master's program, serving as the academic advisor and fieldwork coordinatorfor all students in that program; contribute to the department anduniversity activities; serve on faculty or university committees;engage in scholarly activities and/or creative endeavors. Representative Duties Carry a 24-unit course load per academic year, teaching coursesin the Counseling and College Student Personnel (higher educationand student affairs counseling) online program, which runs on five8-week terms throughout the academic year. E Within that context, the expectation is to create creativeassignments and activities in one-on-one and classroom onlineinstructional settings to foster hands-on, active learning instudents that will develop their expertise in the subject matter.E Assist with necessary course development updates to the onlineCSP program curriculum, as needed in an ongoing basis withconsultation with other full-time faculty in the department. E Maintain an active research program leading to grants,presentations, and/or publications, with a preference for involvinggraduate research assistants and collaborators. E Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting courseobjectives and student learning outcomes through assignments,projects, discussions, and examinations; provide feedback promptlyto student inquiries in class, online, or during establishedconsultation office hours. E Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment,attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum; prepareand submit grades, data, and reports related to the course andstudent progress promptly. E Provide a course syllabus to students in each class within thefirst week of class, as outlined in the faculty handbook, afterbeing reviewed by the department chair. E Adhere to the responsibilities related to teaching, advising,service, and scholarly, professional, and creative activities, asoutlined in the faculty handbook. E Demonstrate active leadership in the department as the programdirector of the online master's program and administrative workconnected to the online program's recruitment, curricula, andfieldwork requirements. The successful candidate in this positionwill earn a 3-unit course release in the fall and spring semestersfor their administrative responsibilities as program director.E Exhibit a commitment to cultural proficiency and anunderstanding of the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural,and ethnic background of university students. Principles and best practices of effective teaching in onlineandragogy Student learning outcomes and methods of assessment University curricula Community and campus resources, services, programs, andprofessional available to students Methods of gathering, analyzing, and preparing data Modern computing technology Record-keeping techniques about student enrollment, attendance,and progress, particular with online graduate programs Ability To Provide evidence of professional experience working as a practitioner in higher education and student affairs, particularlyin administrative roles requiring the use of counseling/helping/advising skills. Demonstrate comfort with and willingness to teach both corecounseling courses as well as higher education contentcourses. Teach at the graduate level, preferably in the area of highereducation and student affairs and/or counseling. Teach and mentor students in a graduate program, either as a graduate teaching assistant, adjunct instructor, and/or a juniorfaculty member. Demonstrate strong organizational and administrative skills. Provide evidence of research and scholarship in highereducation and student affairs. Demonstrate commitment to diversity and equity. Minimum Qualifications Possession of an appropriate earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) inhigher education and student affairs, higher education counseling,or a related field. ABD will be accepted, but will come in at therank of Instructor. Preferred Qualifications 5 or more years as a professional working in higher educationand student affairs; familiarity with diverse higher educationinstitutional types is preferred (e.g., community colleges,four-year public, four-year private institutions). Knowledge of and familiarity with the California CommunityCollege, California State University, and University of Californiasystems. Experience teaching and mentoring adult learner students inonline curricula and programs. Knowledge of and experience with local, state and nationaleducational issues and trends across the P-22 pipeline. Engagement in professional associations, such as theAssociation for the Study of Higher Education, ACPA - CollegeStudent Educators International, and/or NASPA - Student AffairsAdministrators in Higher Education. Willingness to take on leadership roles and serviceopportunities within the department and University over time,including but not limited to department chair. Licenses and Other Requirements N.A.
