Payroll Specialist - (260000BJ) Position Grade: 11G Department: Multiple Departments Job Type: Full‑Time (Permanent) Examination Number: EX1665 Location: St. Louis, MO Incumbents in this position perform payroll duties for a department in the City of St. Louis. Duties include processing bi‑weekly payroll, preparing and processing personnel documents, and maintaining personnel files. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Checking timesheets for accuracy. Entering data into databases and spreadsheets. Handling direct deposit requests and related data. Processing paper checks for distribution. Acquiring all necessary signatures for payroll distribution. Performing other duties as assigned during downtime. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Data Utilization: perform basic data analysis, review, classify, prioritize, reference statutes/guidelines, and diagnose relationships. Human Interaction: provide guidance and interpretation to city employees and subordinate staff on policy application. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: operate and adjust equipment such as computers, calculators, fax machines. Verbal Aptitude: understand and utilize advisory data, employee status forms, workers compensation documents, W‑2 reports, pay regulations, and non‑routine correspondence. Mathematical Aptitude: perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculate percentages and decimals. Functional Reasoning: apply rational system principles, interpret instructions, exercise independent judgment. Situational Reasoning: demonstrate judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable criteria. Environmental Factors: office environment, low risk of injury from irate individuals. Physical Requirements: light physical effort, occasional lifting of 5–10 pounds. Sensory Requirements: recognize shapes, sounds associated with job tasks, such as working with a computer. Qualifications One year of clerical experience that includes preparation and processing of payroll, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
